I can't believe we're almost done with February! Eek. I've never been one to count down days - I have too much I want to still do.
My EGPs are technically in the social relationship and culture finger and snuck in media, sports and entertainment. Students have explored the media's impact on society, advertising impacts, entertainment influence, societal expectations in history and today, art and its interpretation/value, and have practiced paper 1 and 2.
Mid-March will bring a specific focus on test prep along with the environmental finger.
I never abandon cnn10, monthly homework or independent reading. Stability and stamina is important.
AICE English General Paper training
I am a trained EGP teacher who provides professional development to coworkers on Paper 1 and Paper 2 skills.
I have been teaching AICE for 8 years for 9-12 graders and have been an English teacher for 19 years.
I hope everyone had a restful break and is ready to get back at it. I can't believe half the year is over already!
I'll be starting off by reviewing Paper 2 part A with the Holiday scenario in the textbook. Students will then create their own and complete another group's. This allows for 3x the practice from various POV.
What's everyone else doing?

Individual work savers...a great way to quickly assess.
We made it to Thanksgiving break! How's everyone doing?
Starting Government and Politics this coming week.
Current events, cnn10, mini-research projects, the novella Anthem, articles, clips and short stories. Practice paper 1 and 2 as well.
I'm knee-deep into Science and Technology and having students complete their first paper 2 this week. How's everyone holding up?
Remember, consistent exposure to news, reading and writing is key. The Hand is your friend... explore and dive into the units.
It's already week 3 in Florida!!
I'm starting the technology finger, can 10, using the textbook and outside articles and planning for an example prompt: "to what extent is technology taking over our lives?"
Week 1 done - introduced opinion topics with a Would You Rather Game, got to know a few things with a student survey, and completed a personal narrative using the writing process!
GP info sheet and brief overview too. On to week 2.
Curious question:
What do you do (if anything) with phones/phone policy?
The reason for the poll:
If you teach 9 or 10 those kids are in AICE and on-track for an AICE diploma. They're advanced and also taking state exams they need to pass. You have to incorporate both - AICE and regular curriculum.
If you teach 11 or 12 these kids are likely taking the class as a requirement and it's their only AICE course. They're regular kids who can't do the fast pace and deep dive that the advanced kids need.
Be aware when you're looking for resources online or creating lessons. These classes shouldn't look the same even though the test will be.
I've taught all of these grade levels and practice what I preach.
Teacher tip: if a student complains about using the computer/laptop because it hurts their eyes give them a blue transparent binder divider to put over their screen. The blue light will fix the problem unless they need glasses.
