Our first preschool lab of the new school year is live!

Students will explore some of the most interesting and unique national parks across the United States. Each week we'll discover a little bit about the area, then explore the natural features and creatures that help define the park.

Students will receive a National Parks passport during the first session, then add a stamp each week as we travel through these 7 parks:

8/20: Biscayne National Park: Dive beneath the waves to explore coral reefs, mangrove forests, and the amazing underwater world found just off Florida's coast.

8/27: Mammoth Cave National Park: Go deep beneath Kentucky to explore the world's longest cave system, discover amazing cave formations, and learn about the creatures that live in total darkness.

9/3: Redwood National Park: Stand beneath the tallest trees on Earth and learn how tiny seeds grow into towering redwoods hundreds of feet tall.

9/10: Saguaro National Park: Meet the giant saguaro cactus and discover how plants survive in one of the hottest places in America.

9/17: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park: Visit one of the only places on Earth where new land is still being created as we explore flowing lava, volcanic rocks, and the incredible power of Kīlauea.

9/24: Glacier Bay National Park: Cruise past towering glaciers and floating icebergs while learning how moving ice shapes the land.

10/1: Petrified Forest National Park: Discover ancient trees that turned to stone and uncover how fossils preserve clues about Earth's past.

This is a 7-week lab that takes us right up to the week of fall break.

I am a MAJOR national park enthusiast and can't wait to explore so many beautiful places in the US with your student.

With the new school year approaching, I'm interested in hearing what format of classes would work for your schedule!

In the past, I have offered 4-6 week preschool sessions that meet once a week in the morning, as well as one-off classes when school is closed.

I'm looking at several options and would love to know what works for your family's schedule!

➡️ 4-6 week sessions of classes in the morning
➡️ ongoing subscriptions to weekly classes, much like paying for gymnastics or dance
➡️ weekly or one off classes in the afterschool hours
➡️ Saturday morning classes

In the next couple weeks I will be planning out fall classes, so your responses will help me determine what format I should offer!

That's a wrap on day 2 of Treasure Hunters Academy!!

We started class by searching for treasure, then working together to count, sort, and graph the treasure to compare how many jewels we had in each color.

We decoded a message and followed clues to find our treasure of popsicles, which we got to enjoy in the cooler weather!!

For art, we made crayon resistance paintings and coin relief drawings.

We also got to build bridges, play some more 4 corners, and use a magnet to investigate which of our treasures were magnetic!

These classes were a blast-- be on the lookout for some more classes coming soon!

Day 1 of Treasure Hunters Academy was a blast! We had 3 hours packed with nonstop learning and engagement, and our morning included:

💎 reading about maps and looking at various maps form our favorite Disney movies
💎 learning about a compass rose
💎 playing 4 Corners with the four directions (NESW)
💎 using coffee to age paper into maps, then designing our own treasure maps
💎 creating treasure hunter vests
💎 handcrafting pirate ships out of aluminum foil and testing whose ship was the sturdiest
💎 learning how to use a secret code to decode messages

Tomorrow we'll apply what we know for a treasure hunt with a very *sweet* treasure!

We had quite the time in our Shark Research class today!

After some sensory him exploration, we read about different kinds of sharks. We learned that sharks can have rows and rows of teeth, and that they grow a new tooth anytime one falls out.

Then, we went to the big room to feed a hungry shark with number identification! I called out a number, and students found a fish that represented that number through tally marks, a ten frame, a grouping of items, and other formats. Once we fed the shark all the fish, we sorted the numbers in a number line!

Finally, students painted dot sharks in their own style. I love how unique each one turned out!

We're all smiles for our shark research class coming up on Thursday!! During class, we'll learn about the senses sharks use to thrive in the ocean and how to differentiate between the more than 500 species of sharks.

Shark Week kicks off July 26, so this is a great opportunity to learn more about the ocean's most notorious predators and what makes them so unique.

Today during Adventure Camp, we spent a lot of time learning about animal tracks and how to identify different creatures based on their footprints! We went hunting for tracks and matched each one to the animal. We also learned why pine cones open up only in the warm weather, and created squirrel resistance art using aluminum foil!

We're one week away from Adventure Camp! We've got all the high-fives for our friends already signed up-- and several spots still available for interested students.

This 1.5-hour class combines nature, science, and creativity as children investigate animal tracks, conduct experiments, and learn about the amazing world around them.

During class, we will:

-start our time together exploring sensory bins
-read 'Llama LLama Loves Camping'
-study and create animal tracks
-experiment with pinecones to discover why they open and close

When students arrive at a Little Sparks class, they usually have a few different sensory activities to choose from.

Sure, sensory play is fun, and it's nice for your kids to make that kind of mess somewhere that's not your house, but there are several research-driven reasons that we begin class with sensory play.

Engaging the senses through these tactile activities is good for creativity, exploration, and learning, the skills we try to promote in every class! It also promotes hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. And, of course, it's a great way to promote social interaction in children who are a bit more timid or unfamiliar with other students in the class.

This week, students got to play with cloud dough-- a combination of vegetable oil and flour that feels like very fine sand.

The benefits of sensory play are well worth the mess!

Today's ice cream class was nonstop fun!

After some nice and messy sensory boxes, we read Ice Cream: The Full Scoop to learn how ice cream is made in factories. Then, students got the chance to make (and eat!) ice cream in a bag. With just 5 ingredients and a little hard work, they had a delicious treat to enjoy.

We ended the class painting puffy ice cream cones-- all it takes is 1 part glue, 1 part foam shaving cream, and a little paint to create a fluffy paint that has a 3d texture when it dries!
