The Mountain Workshops Western Kentucky University's annual Mountain Workshops teaching visual storytelling through a variety of media.

THE MOUNTAIN WORKSHOPS


The Mountain Workshops are five concurrently-running programs. The Workshops are held each year in a small town in Kentucky. Participants document a story about people in the county and receive intensive critiques from nationally recognized professional visual journalists. Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements, lodging and food. Participants, oth

Scott is a freelance photographer based in Long Beach, California. He previously spent 40 years at newspapers including the Chicago Tribune and the San Francisco Chronicle. Strazzante was part of a team Pulitzer in Chicago and is a former POY Newspaper Photographer of the Year and 2-time Natl. Sports Photographer of the Year.

A CENTER OF HOPE IN MAYSVILLE by Kit Wiberg | Glenview, IL
Samantha “Sam” Major, 33, works on frosting the cupcakes that will go on display at Sprinkles of Hope bakery and deli. “People didn’t even know that I could use the frosting bag,” she said. “We used to just do scoops of blobs of frosting.” Sprinkles, a nonprofit bakery and deli that employs individuals with disabilities, was founded by Meagan Brannon in 2016. Sam and Calleigh Allen, the cashier, greet everyone with a smile. Calleigh, 29, has cerebral palsy and takes orders from her wheelchair behind the counter. “No one would give me a job,” she said. “Now people view me as someone who can do things.”

Ed is an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning staff visual journalist with Reuters, documentary filmmaker and cinematographer. He covers breaking news, investigations and in-depth reporting across multiple continents, with a focus on human centered storytelling. His work spans documentary video, still photography and visual investigations, often combining field reporting with open-source analysis.

🏔️📸 Erin Clark is joining us as a 2026 Mountain Workshop's Photojournalism Coach.
If you want to participate in our Oct. 20-24 workshops in Wi******er, KY, apply online at www.mountainworkshops.org.

Erin is an award-winning photojournalist and a Pulitzer Prize finalist who has been with the Boston Globe since 2018. She has covered the 2020 presidential race, a family fighting for stable housing, educational inequalities in Boston Public Schools, and the coronavirus pandemic, among other stories around the country. Erin graduated from Penn State University and later went on to receive her M.A. at Ohio University, where she was named Ohio College Photographer of the Year.

SERVANT TO GOD AND PEOPLE by Michael Baniewicz | Chicago, IL
A waxing crescent moon hung in the night sky as Addlyn Spence, 11 (left), Brooklyn Applegate, 11 (center left), Darin Spence (center right) and Megan Spence, Darin’s wife, prepared to leave R-Farm Pumpkins and More after an Imagine Foundation event. Megan started the nonprofit Imagine Foundation in Maysville to “provide opportunities for individuals with special abilities,” according to the organization’s page. That includes offering seasonal sports, holiday parties and family fun events, all of which are free. Darin says the foundation has become a large part of the community. “It gave special needs, not just children, but adults, something to look forward to,” Darin said.

🏔️📸 Leslye Davis is joining us as a 2026 Mountain Workshop's Video Storytelling Coach.

Leslye started her career in 2012 as a visual journalist at The New York Times, where she reported on domestic and international issues including America’s opioid crisis, sexual assault on college campuses, and the impact of the Afghanistan war on U.S. troops and their families. In 2020,she and her co-director Catrin Einhorn released afeature-length film called Father Soldier Son on Netflix. The documentary follows one military family over ten years, becoming an intergenerational exploration of values and American manhood in the aftermath of war. The Wall Street Journal called it “novelistic in its sweep and complexity,” and it was praised by The Times of the U.K. as "one of the great war documentaries."
