I prefer writing at night because the darkness nettles our congested patterns of seeing, providing a lens that obscures our vision just enough to see things anew. Darkness allows us to invent new ways of seeing as the branches form and reform shapes through slivers of moonlight and space. Enveloped by the chirping chatter of crickets and the rustle of raccoons in the yard, there is a different kind of breath that takes hold, a different kind of sensation as the night enshrouds its surroundings. At times I write furiously and others slowly as my mind searches for the right word, phrase, or simile. I aim to help kids see the magic that comes from observing their surroundings with inventive eyes and finding just the right way to express things as they see them. Writing gives us time to know ourselves, understand others, and create the world we imagine. I strive to inspire kids with a love and appreciation for many of the gifts that writing can offer.
