🌞 Summer is here and we understand the challenges it brings for our Northshore families needing meal support. We’re excited to announce that community organizations and volunteers have teamed up to ensure no Northshore student goes hungry this summer! 🍎🥪🥕

We are grateful for the support of the Northshore Schools Foundation, and they are accepting donations to support the Community Supported Summer Meal Program. Your generosity will help us purchase food in bulk and provide weekly food boxes for enrolled families. Donations can be made between July 1 and August 14, 2024. Remember, all donations are tax deductible! (NSF Tax ID Number: 91-1680139)

It's World Refugee day, so I'm sharing this photo of my parents and me at the refuge processing center after we escaped the aftermath of the American war in Vietnam on a rickety boat to Malaysia. We were then sent to the Philippines where my parents learned about US culture to prepare for their sponsorship.

This experience left me with physical scars and permanently afflicted me with something called empathy. That is why I see Palestinians as siblings.

In addition, I'm thankful for Coast Salish people who allowed Vietnamese people to fish in the Pacific Northwest in their territory because food was scarce. And, Black civil rights leaders like Coretta Scott King and Bayard Rustin signed a letter to the president then to let us ("Indochinese" refugees) into the US. They knew we would have faced death if we were sent back or not allowed in. We're all connected and I see the solidarity.

joined in solidarity on World Refuge Day.

For refugee day, please donate to students in Palestine who need scholarships: https://www.unrwausa.org/give-to-a-student

In addition, learn more about Washington state's growth in asylum seekers who have not been recognized as refugees yet. See article here for more info: https://publicola.com/2024/02/05/beyond-the-border-addressing-the-asylum-seeker-surge-in-our-own-backyard/

The littles and I (mostly me) had the privilege to listen to Ilyasah Shabazz's interview when she was in town. She is one of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz' a.k.a. Malcolm X's daughters. She spoke profoundly about her father.

He would have been 99 today. There are not many days that go by where I don't think about his teachings and how hurt his family and community must have been to lose a husband, a father, a man who spoke loudly about Palestinian and Black liberation.

Image description for accessibility purposes: This image shows four people standing in an indoor hall. On the left is a Hân, an Asian woman, in a light beige coat, white blouse, and a patterned scarf. In the middle is Ilyasah Shabazz, dressed in a chic, pinstriped suit with a white blouse, accessorized with pearls and glasses. Two children are present; their faces are obscured for privacy. The environment features a carpeted floor and a classic wall sconce, adding to the formal atmosphere of the scene.

As said, “The climate crisis is both the easiest and the hardest issue we have ever faced. The easiest because we know what we must do... The hardest because our current economics are still totally dependent on burning fossil fuels, and thereby destroying ecosystems.”This year, as we celebrate Earth Day, let’s remember that our actions shape the future of our planet and all its inhabitants. Earth Day is a call to unite together, urge for systemic change, and forge a path towards sustainability. 🌍

Alt Text: At the center, the graphic shows a cartoon heart character and an Earth character hugging. The text at the top reads “Happy Earth Day” and the bottom reads “22nd April 2024.”

Today marks 25 years since the tragic events of April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School. We honor the lives lost, the survivors’ strength, and the community’s resilience. Let us never forget, and let us continue to work towards a world free from senseless violence. 🕊️ Please take a moment to visit the Columbine Memorial Foundation’s page at columbinememorial.org to learn more and to support their ongoing efforts to remember and commemorate those affected by the tragedy.

Alt Text: The first page reads “Never Forgotten” with the names and pictures of each of the 13 victims: Cassie Bernall, Steven Curnow, Corey DePooter, Kelly Fleming, Matthew Kechter, Daniel Ma**er, Dan Rohrbough, William Sanders, Rachel Scott, Isiah Shoels, John Tomlin, Lauren Townsend, and Kyle Velasquez. The quote on the second page reads “It brought the nation to its knees, but now that we’ve gotten back up how have things changed; what have we learned?” Both pages have light purple backgrounds and Columbine flowers.

Eid Al-Fitr Mubarak to you and your family.

ID: The image is a square greeting card with a vintage watercolor theme, intended to celebrate Eid Al-Fitr. The background is a textured olive green. In the center, there's a symmetrical arrangement of watercolor illustrations. A golden lantern with intricate details hangs at the core, flanked on both sides by blooming flowers in shades of soft pink and coral with dark centers, and surrounded by green foliage. Above the lantern, the text "Eid Al-Fitr Mubarak" is written in elegant, cursive and capital letters in a gradient of yellow and orange hues. Below the lantern, a smaller, complementary text reads "To You and your Family!" in the same color scheme. The artwork exudes a serene and festive feel, characteristic of Eid celebrations.
