When I work with middle and high school ensembles as a guest, I often start by focusing on internal pulse and the results are frequently immediate.

Internalized sense of pulse is everything:
• Left-hand fingers have to move in time
• Shifts have to be timed
• Bow changes have to be timed
• String crossings have to be timed

Every motion a student makes is coordinated in time with everyone else. That’s why a deeply internalized sense of pulse (in addition to accurate rhythms) makes an enormous difference.

As a result, the ensemble tightens, sounds more convincing, and feels more confident.

Music educators & music education majors: When you place a strong emphasis on internal pulse, do you notice a similar improvement in ensemble cohesion? Interested to hear from your experience.

Many parents are shocked when their child’s great sound doesn’t advance them. Judges quickly listen for style, character, and fit.

When students learn this, results stop feeling random.

Almost no young bassist learns this orchestra skill, but it completely changes how they sound in auditions.

Most double bass students only focus on their own part. But the ones who learn to read the full orchestra score start thinking (and sounding) like real orchestra musicians.

They develop cleaner timing, stronger rhythm, and a deeper awareness of how their bass sound fits into the ensemble. That’s what makes their playing more confident, musical and professional.

As a double bass audition coach, I see this all the time. Once a young bassist understands how to listen, blend, and match other instruments, their whole sound transforms.

What’s one skill or mindset you want your young musician to develop this year?

Share it in the comments; I’d love to hear from you.

I'm thrilled to announce that I was interviewed on Contrabass Conversations — the #1 double bass podcast globally, with over 2 million downloads and 28,000+ subscribers. Hosted by Jason Heath, this podcast has featured some of the greatest names in the double bass world — and now, I get to share what I’ve learned coaching bassists to audition success.

In our episode (coming out in about a month), we dive deep into how I coach bassists to win spots in programs like All-States, BYSO, Interlochen, NEC Prep, and Northwestern Bienen. We also discuss what parents and teachers often miss when preparing students for high-stakes auditions.

This was a huge honor — and a major milestone as a double bass audition coach.

Whether you’re a parent of a serious young bassist or a student on the audition path — stay tuned in about a month and I will share the link to the episode here!
