How I Choose the Books My Students Read

Not every book is the right book for every reader.

When choosing texts for my students, I ask questions like:

✔️ Does this book match the phonics skills we're practicing?
✔️ Will it challenge the student without causing frustration?
✔️ Is it engaging and age-appropriate?
✔️ Will the student experience success while reading it?

I often use decodable texts made with Cody Reading because they allow students to apply the skills they've just learned rather than relying on guessing or memorization.

Success builds confidence, and confidence encourages students to keep reading. One of my current reads that is popular with my Gestalt Language Processors is the "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A..." books because of its lyrical prose.

The goal isn't simply to finish a book—it's to help students become stronger readers with every page they turn.

🚨 Not all 'decodable' AI-generated passages are actually decodable...

Many educators are using ChatGPT to create "decodable" reading passages but when those passages are checked by a reading specialist, they often aren't as decodable as teachers expect.

The challenge isn't just the AI.

It's that most teachers don't have the time to manually verify every passage they generate. When you're moving fast, it's easy to assume a story is aligned with the phonics skills you're teaching when it isn't.

That matters.

Students deserve text that truly matches the skills they're learning, not text that looks decodable.
