PEM | Peabody Essex Museum

A little background on the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage and Hōkūle'a:
After sailing the seas of Polynesia for 40 years, our traditional voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa embarked on her Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage in May 2014, ventured into the Indian and Atlantic Oceans for the first time, met Hawai'i's antipode in South Africa, and touched the South American continent and the Caribbean. Hōkūleʻa made her way up the intracoastal waterway, stopping in Washington, DC and New York City before reaching the shores of New England and beyond! Without the help of modern instruments, using stars, winds and waves to guide and power her, Hōkūleʻa and her worldwide voyage encourage us to think about how traditional knowledge can inform our modern technologies to mālama honua, to take care of our Island Earth.
