Lancet publishes announcement of Commission on Pain Control and Palliative Care
The HGEI-Lancet Commission on Global Access to Pain Control and Palliative Care (GAPCPC) has been officially announced in a Comment published in The Lancet on March 9.
"Access to palliative care ... is at the core of the right to health and is fundamental to health care," the announcement states. "Yet most of the world’s population has little or no access to pain control and palliative care, forcing patients and families to endure a tremendous burden of avoidable suffering."
The Commission was formed to marshal evidence and develop recommendations for policy change that will close this gaping "pain divide." As the announcement concludes, "What has been absent is recognition of pain control and palliative care as an essential part of health systems and a priority for investment in health: this is the motivation and rationale for the GAPCPC."
