Ten years on, and still grateful for all the work Black is the New AP Style has done and the passion she still writes with. Itās crazy what a difference ten years makes in the industry and our profession.
Also just so lucky to call Gina a true friend. ā¤ļø

Happy St Patrickās Day! š Somehow my mind made the hop, skip, and leap from green to envy (makes sense, right??) and got me thinking about this subject. Envy in the music industry and how to use it to your advantage.
Full blog is in our bio, and up on Substack now. When it comes to jealousy, are you someone who gets motivated by it or the opposite?

As a millennial, I still remember the early days of AOL and that beautiful, blissful squeal that came right beforeĀ YOUāVE GOT MAIL!
There was the dark side of the internetāchat rooms, perverts, and the chain mail that I was terrified to receive but always opened. But there was also the beauty of something new unfolding right before our eyes. Neopets and Geocities and so much Flash.
But magic fades, and novelty wears off, and we adapt. Weāve gotten so accustomed to the World Wide Web that we canāt imagine a moment without it.Ā YOUāVE GOT MAILĀ is no longer pride, but punishment. And where we once agonized over which allotted hour weād spend online, we now canāt manage a twenty-minute power outage alone with our thoughts.
The problem is, the internet was supposed to bring us together and help us find our tribes. But actually, itās made it harder than ever.
I wrote about this on Substack and what indie musicians can do to counteract it. Full post is on Substack, linked in the bio.

It started when I read a Substack about record labels in 2026 and ended when I wrote my own Substack about my craving for physical spaces for music, for me, for you, for community, for Muddy Paw PR and what that looks like in 2026.
I traced the roots of this desire and if itās even possible throughout this look at the music landscape. Is there even an appetite for things like this beyond this one millennial publicist? Or are we all just chronically online now?
Signed, an introvert who was surprised to learn this about herself!

Not all networking is created equal. But it *is* still a vital part of growth for independent musicians, music industry professionals, and really anyone wanting to grow. Are you making these mistakes?
11/24/2025
I love an EP. I adore an album. Music is the whole reason I get to do what I love every day. But it isnāt the whole picture and it definitely isnāt what makes most musicians able to do this long term.
For better or worse, the music isnāt THE thing that pays the bills for full time musicians anymore, and to ignore that if youāre an artist who wants to either do this as a career or make any money is a mistake. Good music is still what drives this engine, so please donāt take this as me saying the music doesnāt matterā¦it is ultimately the most important thing!! But if you want people to *hear* that music and you want to build something lasting off it, there are other things to consider.
What do you think? What else is part of an artistās ecosystem or, do you think itās simpler (or more complicated?) than all this?
