Ed Saindon’s “Lessons and Clinics with Gary Burton” is coming together nicely. Tons of material there already and more to be added. It includes detailed notes of 43 private lessons Ed took with Gary in the early 70s, a ground breaking handout Gary created for the mallet lab when he began teaching at berklee in the early 70s, an interview Ed did with Gary in the early 80s, 8 clinics spanning from 1987 to 2003 on improv/vibraphone with transcriptions of Gary’s playing, many solo transcriptions, solo vibes transcriptions, and Ed’s examples based on Gary’s concepts.

Here is a simple 12 bar “Two-Voice Etude” from “Pedaling and Dampening Applications for the Vibraphone” by Ed Saindon. On a piece like this it’s good to explore as many different ways to apply dampening techniques as possible. For instance, in the first reading I’m using Two-Hand Dampening Techniques and on the second reading I mixed it up with different One-Hand and Two-Hand Dampening Techniques. One-Hand Dampening Techniques help to minimize the motion and free one of the hands.
