"Antisemitism, just like racism and other forms of bigotry, thrives when people look the other way. Every time someone makes an antisemitic joke and no one challenges them, every time we witness injustice as a bystander and do nothing about it, we enable the dehumanization of entire communities."

Deeply grateful to the AJC - American Jewish Committee for having Facing History & Ourselves be a part of the DMV Independent School Summit in Washington DC this week, with President & CEO Desmond K. Blackburn, PhD delivering the keynote address. It was a meaningful opportunity to connect with school leaders and the Jewish community to discuss inclusion, belonging, and tools to address antisemitism in the classroom.

This award-winning semi-autobiographical novel blends memoir with myth as it recounts the story of a young Iranian refugee living in Oklahoma, exploring immigrant experience with humor and tragedy as it engages with themes of identity, belonging, and the power of storytelling.

On October 22 from 7-8pm EST, we're holding a FREE professional development webinar for ELA educators that will introduce participants to Nayeri's wonderful novel and feature student-centered strategies for reading this book as an All Community Read.

On this day 28 years ago, 21-year-old University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard died six days after falling victim to a brutal homophobic hate crime. His horrific murder galvanized the nation and helped to bring about legislation including 2009’s Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

As we observe LGBTQ+ History Month, we're sharing a lesson in the comments that details why teaching this topic is so important—the inspiring and the dark alike—to help students consider whose experiences are included in the history taught in schools, whose are often left out, and how that may reflect and perpetuate the “in” and “out” groups in our society.

On this day in 1946, the first Nuremberg trials ended with guilty verdicts for 19 former N**i leaders including Hermann Göring, Rudolf Hess, and Julius Streicher. Today we're sharing "Justice and Judgement after the Holocaust," a lesson from our Teaching Holocaust and Human Behavior unit that teachers can use to help their students grapple with the meaning of justice and the purpose of trials as they learn how the Allies responded to the atrocities of N**i Germany.

A longtime friend of Facing History & Ourselves, Wiesel is perhaps best known for his book Night which detailed his experiences at the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps.
