The Jeju 4.3 Incident, a tragedy in modern Korean history, resulted in the deaths of 30,000 people during seven years and seven months of unrest from March 1947 just before the Korean War, until September 1954 by the military and police. Scholars also consider the Jeju 4.3 Incident as the starting point of the Cold War in Northeast Asia. In 2021, the ruling and opposition parties passed the revision of the Jeju 4.3 Special Act, making some progress in restoring the honor of the victims. However, the bereaved families of the Jeju 4.3 victims still face a challenging path amid ideological conflicts.

The U.S. military government, which ruled Korea at the time, provided weapons to the Korean military and was directly or indirectly involved in the slaughter of Jeju residents as communists. In December of last year, our organization held the Jeju 4.3 Conference at the Woodrow Wilson Center, a U.S. Congressional think tank and visited the U.S. Congress to urge them to uncover the truth about the Jeju 4.3 Incident.

Each year, the Commemoration of the Victims of the Jeju April 3 Incident is held on April 3 in Jeju, Korea. This date is the official memorial day of the Republic of Korea's government. It has now been 75 years since the Jeju 4.3 Incident.

In the Americas, the Jeju 4.3 Victims Memorial Ceremony officially began last year. We invite you to attend this event to commemorate the victims of the Jeju 4.3 Incident and strengthen our bonds of friendship in the name of human rights beyond ideology. A reception will follow the event from 7 pm to 8 pm. Please RSVP to confirm your attendance.

U.S.-Korea Relations: Retrospective on the Jeju April 3 Incident, Human Rights, and Alliance Retrospective on the Jeju 4.3 Incident, Human Rights, and Alliance

03/23/2022

The April Third Jeju Uprising and Massacre, the biggest peacetime massacre of civilians in post-1945 Korean history, warrants study, remembrance, and reconciliation. From March 1, 1947 to September 21, 1954, more than 30,000 innocent civilians were massacred by government authorities in the name of quelling Communists. Scholars view the tragedy as a major turning point, if not the start, of the Cold War in Northeast Asia. Today, some 75 years later, truth, accountability, justice, and reconciliation have yet to be fully established. This retrospective seeks to cast the Jeju Sasam Incident through the prism of truth, justice, human rights, and historical memory. The ongoing tragedy in Ukraine–perhaps the start of a new Cold War–offers a new perspective on this old Korean tragedy.

We've started an educational lecture series called “The History You Never Heard” The purpose of this lecture series is to share with the American public a lesson that is educationally and historically important - “That State violence against citizens is a criminal.”

We found evidence of this abuse in the US Military's Report which documented the military's response to the Jeju Uprising which took place in 1948. The American public is not aware of this tragedy that occurred on Jeju Island. We hope to bring light to this incident and in doing so, heal the wounds that exist as a result of this tragedy.

< The History You Never Heard> is hosted by community leaders, students, and ordinary people who are interested in social justice issues. Our organization will be co-hosts. We named the hosts of this lecture the ‘Truth Storytellers.’
