In the dedication to this book, Mary Wygodski thanks her husband Mort and Tom Burke thanks his wife Mary Ellen - both of whom died before the publication of Evil Must Not Have the Last Word. The word "love" appears twice in that dedication and sets a tone for this very personal story of survival. There are many books on the Holocaust yet the continued presence of deniers prompted Mary Wygodski to go back to those times and recount them to Tom Burke. That journey as the reader will find in this book, is a hard one to go on yet never one of bitterness or defeat. That's made clear in the foreword. "As I write this," Wygodski says, "I have outlived Adolf Hi**er by seventy-six years. I have outlived his fellow traveler and mass murderer Joseph Stalin by sixty-eight years. May their names vanish. They did not defeat me." Reading this you come away with the richness of life before and after the Holocaust, the families that flourished, the work that was done. Mort went on to help build the US Saturn Rocket. Mary became a teacher and public speaker. Later in life, their photograph shows an attractive older couple. Ordinary in every respect except one. A worthy addition to the shelves on the Holocaust and for readers of memoirs which illuminate history.
