Join us along with BU Student Government and Umoja: BU’s Black Student Union for an interactive training on how to be a better ally to people of color within the LGBTQ+ community! This training will be led by Dr. Tanya O. Williams (she/her) and Chris Haigh (they/them).⠀

Participants will learn about whiteness in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, the experiences of people of color within the LGBTQ+ community, and the skills necessary to take on allyship as a continuing practice.⠀

During this time, we would like to offer an opportunity for students to share how they have been affected by recent events surrounding racial injustice, police brutality and other acts of inequality surrounding us. We also invite you to share your experiences and thoughts as to how we can continue to work together to promote a diverse and inclusive environment at GMS and beyond.

Juneteenth, a truncation of “June Nineteenth”, is a day to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. Many people believe the Emancipation Proclamation issued on January 1, 1863 marked the end of slavery. While it did mean freedom for many enslaved African Americans, President Abraham Lincoln’s executive order issuing that slaves be “forever free” was defied in the Confederate state of Texas.
