Thanksgiving is a day about gratitude and togetherness. A chance to pause and marvel at the strange, messy beauty of being part of something bigger than ourselves. But it’s also a holiday built on a story that doesn’t quite hold up to scrutiny, and acknowledging that feels necessary if we’re being honest about what it means to truly be a community.

So here’s to gratitude. Real gratitude. The kind that isn’t afraid to sit with the uncomfortable truths. I’m thankful for the incredible learning community we’ve built together, for every shared insight, every laugh, every hard-earned “aha!” moment. You inspire me to keep showing up, keep creating, keep striving to make this space welcoming and meaningful for all of us.

And here’s to reflection. To honoring the Native peoples whose history and culture deserve far more than a footnote in today’s celebrations. Let’s keep learning, questioning, and growing; not just in language, but in understanding and empathy.

On that day, I walked into my new job with a birthday-girl ribbon pinned to my chest. The work bully assigned to that location*, in the most ‘mean girl’ fashion that I thought only existed in movies, said, ‘It’s kinda pathetic that you got that for yourself.’

I think all immigrants know what it feels like to be othered, to keep trying to belong in a place that keeps reminding you that you’re out of place. But for some reason, after going through so much worse, it’s that episode that stuck with me. There’s a symbolic weight in making someone feel unimportant on their birthday.

It reminds me of that cliché about never forgetting how people make you feel—and I would hate to be remembered for making someone feel small.

A few years before that, I had a boss in NYC—a fellow immigrant, from India—who would often say, ‘You can’t be an immigrant and not be bold.’ Freshly migrated Talu didn’t know exactly what that meant in practical terms, but this seasoned, 35-year-old Talu knows it’s about showing up as you are and imposing your presence until acceptance becomes inevitable.

The respect and acceptance I give out stem from the love I show myself. I don’t believe in that story about only being capable of showing love when you love yourself. I’m pretty sure people who are at all parts of their self-esteem journey can still respect and admire others. But there’s a special kind of love that emanates from your damn Dollar Tree birthday-girl ribbon, like a Care Bear magical beam.
