In Egypt, Set suffocated his own brother. In every tradition, the elder gods grew hostile toward him, not merely because of his actions, but because of the persona he embodied. His towering stature, battlefield dominance, and relentless appetite for authority shaped a god whose power outpaced his restraint. It was this combination of strength without morality that ignited his downfall and cemented the archetype later remembered as The Adversary, aka Satan.

In the Baal Cycle, Hadad fought for El, defeating his enemies. At El's side, none challenged his authority. In the Hymn to Rammanu, the mountain Lord Elil orders Hadad forward to conquer. In this hymn, Elil begins to fear him. In Ezekiel 28:14, Satan is described as a mighty guardian of God's throne.
