Q: How does Education Boothbay help?

A: Education Boothbay is a nonprofit supporting the Boothbay region schools of Southport, Edgecomb, BRES, and BRHS. We hope to communicate to the community the great work the teachers and staff do. We are also a vehicle for donors to help by funding teacher grant requests for special items not covered in the school budgets. This includes STEM equipment, musical instruments, a book vending machine, music theater and visual art grants, and other teacher-led projects. In the past few years, Education Boothbay has funded over $200,000 in grants for these kinds of initiatives.

Educators and administrators at Boothbay Region schools will tell you the same thing: the arts are part of the culture here, and part of how students progress.

It shows up in brain development research, and it shows up every time a student steps onto a stage or picks up an instrument for the first time.

Through their partnership with the Moore Music Fund and the Winslow Arts Grant, Education Boothbay has been able to provide over $55,000 in instruments and experiences for the students of the Boothbay Region since 2021.

From band equipment (including a tuba, flute, guitars, and a piano), to a drumming residency, support for the high school musical, and trips to Portland Stage, Education Boothbay is excited to be a part of the arts and musical education for our students in the Region.

The arts are well and alive here in our community!

Q: How has having children in the schools shaped your view?

A: Medea and I moved here because of the community support, and our kids have been embraced by the community through the schools. The schools provide opportunities for kids to be successful, whether they’re heading to college, trade school, or straight to the workforce. We are blessed and proud to call the Boothbay region home.

Michelle Miclette didn't set out to be a teacher. Boothbay had other plans.

With a background in public health and epidemiology, she came to town for her husband's job, started volunteering in her children's classrooms, and never really left. Twenty-four years later, she teaches sixth-grade math and science at Boothbay Region Elementary School, and her classroom looks more like a lab than most labs do.

For the past eight years, her students have partnered with the Boothbay Sea and Science Center to grow kelp, measuring salinity, pH, and temperature while tracking how it adapts to changing conditions in the Gulf of Maine. Real data. Real science. Right here.

"I just want the kids to be excited about it. To figure out how the world works."

She also knows which moments last. Students come back years later and say, "Remember when...?" That's when she knows it mattered.

Miclette describes Boothbay's school as "a little bit of glue" holding the wider community together. After 23 years, she's become part of that glue herself.

Lennon Sherburne ('18) grew up in a lobstering family on the Boothbay peninsula. Now they bring voices like that to NPR.

"Growing up, I never heard lobstermen's voices on the radio. Now I think a lot about how to make sure communities like ours are being heard, and that we're telling our own stories."

The instinct started early. In Mark Gorey's AP Literature class at Boothbay Region High School, Sherburne built a makeshift recording studio out of a foam-lined cardboard box and made a podcast instead of a newspaper article. They interviewed locals at the Y, in the weight room, anywhere someone had something to say. It was, Sherburne recalls, a turning point.

Boothbay gave them more than academic preparation. It gave them the belief that they could go further.

"The longer I'm away, the more I see how much Boothbay gave me — and how rare that kind of place really is."

Q: What grounds your leadership on the Edgecomb and AOS 98 School Boards? What’s top of mind for you right now?

A: "Public education is vital to a healthy democracy—whether we're talking about national issues or local ones.

In my volunteer leadership role, I bring both experience in education and a personal connection: I come from a family of teachers, I’ve been a parent in this district, and I share in the day-to-day realities of this community—I’m paying my taxes and navigating the same pressures. That perspective helps me listen well, support educators, and create space for creativity and resilience in our schools."

An educated democracy is a strong democracy!
