Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 24th Annual Martin & Doris Rosen Symposium!

On Monday, Symposium attendees and Center friends gathered for food and fellowship during a banquet at App State’s North End Zone Facility. The evening included a blessing from Rabbi Jessica Fox of Temple of the High Country, remarks from College of Arts and Sciences at Appalachian State University Dean Dr. Mike Madritch and newly appointed CJHPS Director Dr. Darci Gardner, and a keynote lecture from Rabbi Michael Berenbaum offering a powerful reflection on this year’s theme, “Survivors.”

We extend our gratitude to the Claims Conference, the Rosen Symposium Endowment, and all Center supporters whose commitment strengthens the Center’s mission and expands the reach of this Symposium year after year. We look forward to celebrating the 25th next summer.

We're pleased to welcome Dr. Darci Gardner as the Leon Levine Distinguished Professor and Director of Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies!

We're pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Darci Gardner as director of Appalachian State University's Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies, effective July 1.

Gardner, a professor of French in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, brings more than a decade of teaching, research, and community‑engaged humanities leadership to the role. She holds a B.A. in Comparative Literature from Vanderbilt University and a Ph.D. in French with a minor in Italian from Stanford University.

This Tuesday, April 14, Yom HaShoah, we will hold a public reading of the names of Jews murdered during the Holocaust. The reading will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the atrium of the Belk Library and Information Commons.

We are seeking volunteers to read names during the event. Those interested can sign up for fifteen‑minute slots (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19BEhSaDLCzJeebyjS-q-OYO2JfvDoUKa/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=110104816935355729428&rtpof=true&sd=true).

Teacher registration is now open for the 24th Annual Martin and Doris Rosen Symposium, taking place July 9–15 in Boone!

For more than two decades, the Rosen Symposium has brought educators from across North Carolina and the United States together to learn about the Holocaust and how to teach it effectively. Participants will learn from renowned scholars, pedagogy experts, and survivors through workshops, lectures, and discussions.

Educators receive classroom‑ready tools and resources and benefit from access to survivor testimony, year‑round expert guidance, and ongoing support from a network of scholars and educators. At the conclusion of the symposium, participants earn four continuing education credits (CEUs) and a certificate of completion.
