Cleveland County Astronomical Society

Cleveland County Astronomical Society We are one of the smallest clubs, but one of the most active! Inspired by Comet Halley, the CCAS was founded in 1986 by Paul Webb.

In its formative years the club grew to a membership of 15 and acquired a 16" f/4.5 Dobsonian as a clubscope. Paul left in 1988, after which the club kept a low profile until being revived by Ken Vassy in September 1989. BoB Eskridge succeeded Ken as president in 1992, and the club staged the first installment of “BoBfest,” its annual Regional Meeting of Amateur Astronomers, the following year. Si

nce then, The CCAS has continued to be an active organization in amateur astronomy in the region, with Steve Davis, then Roger Ivester succeeding BoB as president. The current president is Don Brooks. The Club’s members participate in a wide range of programs oriented toward the amateur astronomer and the general public including telescope demonstrations, video and slide presentations, and other educational programs. This regional meeting is known as “BoBfest” for Carolinas’ Astronomy Ambassador, BoB Eskridge.

Club meeting, Thursday, 6/18 at Gardner Webb's observatory. Doors open at 6:30.

Note that you may have to come in from the Tucker center or the very back road behind the football stadium. There has been significant construction on the road in front of the Observatory.

All are welcome and if we aren't sweating too badly, perhaps around dark we'll have clear skies to take out a telescope or two.

Wow, it's been a month already? Our May meeting is this Thursday, 5/21, at Gardner Webb's Observatory, 7:00 PM! Note that you may have to come in from the Tucker center or the very back road behind the football stadium. There has been significant construction on the road in front of the Observatory.

Our April meeting is this Thursday, 4/16/15. Come on out to the Craven Williams observatory at Gardner Webb for 7:00 meeting....doors open at 6:30. Note that there is major construction on the road getting down to the observatory. You probably have to come in from the back road or from the Tucker Center road that cuts over to the observatory road.

Saturday night (28th) is the rain date for our event at the Kings Mountain Gateway trail. Come out with the family and check out some great views of Jupiter, the Moon, and more! Solar viewing in the parking lot around 6:30 ........ then hike up to the plateau towards dark for some deep sky views.
