And not one project is affordable student house for FAU
Boca Raton’s new residential project rises as the city experiences continued growth A select number of buyers have begun to move into Alina, a luxury residential project in Boca Raton as the project eyes a full completion by the end of year. Alina is one of several residential pro…
People wonder why Florida Atlantic University and Florida Atlantic Alumni FAU Division of Student Affairs are so adamant about off campus student housing and entertainment especially when Mayor Scott Singer and the City of Boca Raton, FL Government are more focused on business and wealthy resident growth. It’s pretty actually simple.
1.) Mizner Park home to entertainment and high end shopping plus restaurants and bars are out of the price range of most college students and the bars more geared towards students and blue collar workers are further away from campus.
2.) Eastern Atlantic Avenue in City of Delray Beach, Florida Government is the spot to go to on Friday and Saturday nights for the Southern part of the county. On Saturdays traffic is backed up all the way to 95 even during off season as Delray Beach has spent the money to build up Atlantic Avenue area with housing, hotels, shops, bars, and restaurants. Delray Beach city commissioners are often jokingly heard saying as college students come to the strip if Boca don’t want em we’ll gladly take em. Even at 15-20 bucks for Uber and Lyft both ways with tip.
Finally.) Good old fashion politics. There is still a lot of money old and new in and around the area of the campus who doesn’t want to see grow. They worry about drunken students, crime, aesthetics, property values if the university grows and their quiet neighborhoods become ranging block parties and not so busy commercial spaces become mix use developments with increased traffic.
So why this push for more housing and more student oriented developments. Well it’s simple explanation really. Often studies have shown students with fond memories of their time at their university will be more than willing to donate to the school and be there for events geared towards the benefit of the university. Also these studies have shown that alumni may be more than willing to invest in the community with business, financial or other resources. So wouldn’t that also benefit the city of ? I think so.
So as we hit the summer dead period which means many of the students who call home for the year it’s time to plan for the push to get more off campus housing for students as well as the entertainment district close to campus so students can stay close to home on a Saturday night.

When apartments could be used for student housing they are leaving most for family, work force or affordable housing. When is this going to change.

This is true. Having a successful athletics department and more tv exposure will bring more attention to your university and more applications. Yet having a successful relationship with the community outside the university is important as well and this is where Florida Atlantic University and the City of Boca Raton, FL Government have butted heads over the years especially lately. Mayor Scott Singer is more interested in bringing in wealthy businesses and residents than helping FAU solve its impending crisis of student housing.
In order to fix this it’s going to take the Florida Atlantic Alumni, students and the community to change the minds of the city council and the mayor. That means finding candidates that will support FAU and work to identify areas for student only housing and entertainment. But the time is now to do so. Because it has been proven that alumni that have had a good experience at a university and community will be more than willing to invest in the community and the university.
If you are a Florida Atlantic University student you have probably noticed all the bright and shiny new apartment and condo buildings sprouting up around the city of Boca Raton, Florida and wondering if students will benefit from the new construction. Well the City of Boca Raton, FL Government and Mayor Scott Singer will tell you yes but this is a lie. They are more interested in drawing businesses and residents from higher taxed areas such as the North East and the Pacific Coast than helping Florida Atlantic University get more housing.
In fact if they had their way they would like to see FAU close down and move out west or north somewhere because of the prime real estate that the university sits on but they can’t do anything because the state gave the university the land and only the state can take close it down. But for the Mayor and his Allies they rather deny students an entertainment and housing district like Atlantic Avenue in the City of Delray Beach, Florida Government where they welcome students and younger residents than Boca Raton.
And with over 46 thousand applicants for FAU the university name is out there but unfortunately there is not enough housing for them all. This needs to change and it’s time to lay on the pressure. Florida Atlantic Alumni and big name real estate developers need to turn the pressure on also along with FAU Division of Student Affairs because for four to six years you are a resident of Boca Raton and you have a say what goes on in your city. So be that voice.

Greetings everyone:
I know many of you are wondering what this page is about. For years in the Boca Raton community including the city government the view of Florida Atlantic University was that of a commuter or two year university where students went when they couldn’t get into their first choice of universities. The university sports were not seen as a contender to anything and news was often bad of poor graduation rates and high transfers.
But over the years that began to change as the university made commitments to improve the living standards and situation on campus. The university committed to it’s football program by building a on campus stadium and a new set of dorms. It reached out to the community to try and build a entertainment district for students to live and go to. Then when President John Kelly came from Clemson every began a tremendous upward trend. There was a focus on hiring more professors, increasing the graduation rates, teaming with research institutions, and so much more. Sports saw FAU baseball take at the time a number 1 seed to the brink of elimination in a regional. The Boca Raton Bowl puts a spotlight on the city and the university. More dorms and advisors and improved graduation rate brought more money. FAU Mend basketball made a magic run to the Final Four last year putting FAU on the map along with Ole Miss Football Head Coach leading the Owls from 2017-2019. So with all that you figured the community would be behind the university? Sadly no.
FAU had its Allies in the city in the government in a couple city council meetings and Mayor Susan Haynie who supported a student oriented district near the school. But politics changed. Susan Haynie was removed from office over corruption charges against her. Board members resigned or were replaced in elections. Neighborhoods close to the campus and the proposed district opposed it over concerns of crime, drunk students and property values. Mayor Scott Singer who replaced Susan Haynie killed the project only after one student oriented housing was built.
Mayor Scott Singer is like the Batman Character Two-Face. He says one thing and does another. This was completely evident during the FAU Men's Basketball Final run. He said he supports FAU but used the magic of that journey to try and grab wealthy residents and businesses to come to Boca Raton while ignoring FAU’s housing crisis. FAU for two years had to originally contract out hotel rooms to house students. Now news reported that 46k students applied to FAU. Now not everyone can get in but there is not enough room on campus and the city of Boca Raton, Florida and the city government rather focus on residents who have money and businesses more than its local university that is quickly getting to the capacity of how many students can live on campus.
So this page is a campaign. A campaign to get student only oriented housing built in the city of Boca Raton. But we need help. We need Florida Atlantic Alumni as well as business and realty leaders along with the student organizations on campus to help us identify and find candidates to help change the city council and put pressure on the mayor to find a location of student housing and entertain district. We can do this but we need help.
So like and follow this page to keep up with updates and news. Thank you.
