It's that time of year! Per KRS 159.160, each private school at home must notify their local superintendent that they are homeschooling.
You can find a sample letter at homeschoolkentucky.org

It must be sent in within the first two weeks of school starting in your district.

Historically , the recommended method of delivery is certified letter, signature required.
Some opt to hand deliver two copies, asking for them to be marked received in some way with the date and Keeping a copy for your records.
Email has also become acceptable in some districts, but print out the acknowledgement because it might disappear after awhile

Snail mail without some sort of certification means you won't have easy proof should you ever need it so it's not advised.

Offered a form when you go in to the BOE? Politely decline and inform them your letter is compliant with the law.

There have been several questions lately about what records are required to maintain according to Kentucky Law. Here is the legal breakdown, with reference to applicable KRS.
KRS 158.050 Defines the school year as between July1 and June 30
KRS 158.070 (1. (a) and (d) school term 185 days (170 of these are instructional days and should be the equivalent of 1062 hours)
158.080 subjects taught (but not the way you choose to cover them, which is why unschooling is a great viable option in KY)
159.040 scholarship reports and attendance (these don't have to look like a traditional report card, although that is the easiest way, but do need to be done in the same interval as your local district.)

You can also find a plain-language explanation of these statutes in the Best Practices Document, section E. Take time to read it. Download it. Print it. But get familiar with it so you don't fall prey to erroneous information. Link to BPD in comments.

There have been several questions lately about how HB1 might affect homeschool families in KY. The answer is as clear as mud. It will depend on several factors that remain to be determined. The Secretary of State office will oversee the future program so we will have to watch to see what develops.

HB298, one of the bills to allow homeschool students to access KEES scholarships, passed out of the House Committee on Postsecondary Education this morning with 10 yes votes, 2 pass votes, and 1 no vote. Because this bill deals with an appropriation of funds, it is expected to now go to the House Committee on Appropriations and Revenue, which is not unusual for bills that have a financial component. Regardless of the final outcome, this is a positive step since we believe it is the first time a homeschool KEES bill has advanced in the House. Thank you to bill sponsor Rep Shane Baker and committee chairman Rep James Tipton, and to all the committee members who voted yes!

HB298, one of the bills to allow homeschool students to receive an equitable share of KEES scholarships, is being heard once again tomorrow, March 17, in the House Committee on Postsecondary Education. This piece was released yesterday on social media. Heads up, homeschool families! This is part of why we have Advocacy Day and show up at the Capitol. Next year, I hope we can get some representation from Western KY because Trigg County legislators (Sen. Howell and Rep. Walker) need to know what their homeschool constituents have to say about this.
You don't have to wait until Advocacy Day 2027 though! Look for opportunities during May-Dec to meet with them close to home. Consider inviting them to come speak to your group.
The schools might have a truancy issue, but it's a public school problem, not a homeschool one.

From 2022 through 2025, Trigg County Public Schools lost 151 students to homeschooling opportunities, and only 22 — or 14.57% — have since returned to the classroom. This year, another 40 have also joined those homeschooling ranks.

I am thrilled to share with you Kentucky Right to Life’s 2026 Legacy Scholarship, a significant mission and outreach effort of the Right to Life Educational Foundation of Kentucky, in collaboration with our Right to Life Chapters across the Commonwealth.

Since 2021, one of our primary goals is to invest in the next generation by establishing a scholarship program for high school students. Our youth represent 25% of our population, yet they are 100% of our future.

The ‘Next Generation Legacy Scholarship Fund’ has awarded over (25) $1000.00 Scholarships since inception. This year, I am delighted to announce that KRTL has expanded our scholarship opportunities and will be granting multiple $1000.00 and $500.00 Legacy Scholarships in two categories: Oratory and Media/Film.

The submission for Film/Media Competition is April 1, 2026. This year’s scholarship awards will be presented in early May.
