Training is non negotiable if you want your athlete to become elite.

Becoming elite doesn’t happen in a 1 month or 3 month block.

It happens over the course of many months and even years.

Talent will always get you in the room, but it won’t keep you in that room.

Our mantra is Competition Breeds Success.

At NLA, we believe competition brings out another level. We race. We jump. We lift. We compete. We track results.

Not to tear athletes down—but to teach them how to perform when something is on the line.

COMPETITION BREEDS SUCCESS.

Split squats are one of my favorite movements for athletes because sports are rarely played with both feet evenly planted.

Benefits of Split Squats for Athletes

1. Single-leg strength — Builds strength through each leg independently instead of allowing the stronger side to dominate.
2. Acceleration strength — The split stance has good carryover to the positions athletes use when pushing into the ground during acceleration.
3. Hip stability — Challenges the glutes, adductors, and surrounding hip musculature to control the pelvis and femur.
4. Deceleration & control — Especially with a slow eccentric, athletes learn to absorb force and control positions.
5. Improves usable mobility — Trains hip and ankle range of motion under load rather than mobility being completely separate from strength.
6. Builds the posterior chain and quads — You can change the emphasis based on torso angle, stride length, and loading.
7. Helps address asymmetries — Each side has to produce and control force on its own.
8. Easy to progress — DB split squat → front-foot elevated → rear-foot elevated/Bulgarian → heavier loading → eccentric/isometric variations.

Every week NLA does recovery and mobility training. You need to know when to stress the CNS and when to restore it.

At NLA, a weekly recovery/mobility session can focus on restoring range of motion, controlling positions, light movement, isometrics, tissue tolerance, breathing/down-regulation, and addressing areas that get beat up from sport.

Why it matters

1. Better movement — Mobility helps athletes access the positions they need for sprinting, jumping, cutting, squatting, and throwing.
2. Better training quality — An athlete who comes into the next speed or power session feeling fresh can produce more high-quality reps.
3. Keeps the body prepared — Ankles, hips, adductors, hamstrings, shoulders, and the trunk all take a beating throughout the week. Recovery work gives you a chance to address them before the next hard session.
4. Teaches athletes how to take care of their bodies

Great drill to provide explosive movements for athletes in contact sports.

A little belated birthday post for Coach Jon—but more importantly, a chance to recognize the man behind Next Level Athletes. ❤️

When people see NLA, they see the training, the athletes, the hard work, the progress and the results.

But what they may not always get to see is the man behind it all.

To Jon, these kids have never been just members of a gym or athletes who come in to train. He genuinely cares about each and every one of them—and their families. He celebrates their wins, pushes them when they need it, believes in them when they may not believe in themselves, and is always there when they need someone in their corner.

And that relationship doesn’t end when they walk out the doors of NLA.

These athletes become family.

Jon has opened not only his gym to them, but his home and his life. He knows their families. He follows their seasons. He shows up. He listens. He jokes with them, challenges them, teaches them, and probably gives them a hard time every chance he gets. 😂

But underneath all of that is something you can’t fake:

He loves these kids.

And if you spend enough time around NLA, you can see just how much they love Coach Jon right back.

That is the part of Next Level Athletes that can be difficult to put into an advertisement or explain on a website. NLA was built to develop better athletes—but somewhere along the way, something much bigger was created.

A family.

So although this birthday post may be a little late, the appreciation behind it certainly isn’t.

Happy Belated Birthday, Coach Jon. 🎂

Thank you for everything you pour into these athletes, their families, and the NLA community. The impact you make goes far beyond what happens inside the gym.

This is the real man behind Next Level Athletes.

And this is what really looks like. ⚡

The work is the work. The difference is showing up every single week versus showing up when it’s convenient.

One of the coolest things about NLA. The diversity we offer. We have division 1 athletes, division 2 athletes, middle school athletes all warming up together.

Now they don’t all have the same
Programming, but they all are coached the same.
