Platoon Tactical Challenge - A Great Day! (Part 1 of 2) 03/20/2016

What a terrific day we’ve had today! The first platoon launched at 0700 this morning to begin a nearly 3 mile track that encompassed a number of challenging and fun stations spread across the campus.

The first station required the platoon to create multiple rope bridges across the creek to move themselves and several heavy ammo boxes from one side to the other.

Once complete, the plan called for the platoons to proceed to the obstacle course where they would accomplish three obstacles within minimal time. After the first, platoon, however, rain set in for the rest of the day and so this station was eliminated for safety reasons.

The next station tested the resourcefulness of the platoon as they were required to figure out how to assemble an A-frame device and then, with a cadet on board, figure out how to ‘walk’ it across a designated track.

The platoons then began to run to their next station which was the pond located near the vet-med school. There they had to board canoes, preferably without tipping them over, and cross the length of the pond. In order to get everyone across, it required the first wave of cadets to return the canoes via land before the second wave could launch. All cadets had to return to the starting point for their total time to be calculated.

From there it was a run across campus to the practice facility on top of Chicken Hill (behind the stadium) where they had a series of team-based challenges that included 5-person skis, 5 cadets-in-a-bag, and carrying their squad leaders across the finish line.

Next up was a run across the campus to the War Memorial Gym where the platoon members changed clothes and were required to construct two rafts to transport two heavy pieces of log across the length of the pool. All platoon members were required to swim the length of the pool to complete the challenge.

Finally, the Platoon Leader and Sergeant then had to run the rest of the way across campus to the Tactical Ops Center (TOC) where the ‘finish line’ was located and their total time, challenge times, and penalties were calculated to determine their scores relative to others.

We were pleased to welcome Virginia Tech President Sands along with his wife, Dr. Laura Sands, who visited all the sites as well as the TOC.

A big thanks to all the cadets who manned the station throughout what was a cool, wet day…and to our staff, in particular LTC Payne and SGM Combs who were the principle staff overseeing today’s program.

We hope you’ll get a sense from the pictures how much the cadets put into preparing for today…and how their spirit, ingenuity, teamwork, and leadership paid off.

A big thanks to CPT Allie Oberoi for being our principle photographer today!

The results of the competition are being tabulated and reviewed. More to follow!

Definitely in the Spirit of Ut Prosim!
