NDDOT will begin mowing a seven-to-ten-foot clearance along shoulders of state highways starting in mid-June to July 1 depending on grass height.Additional mowing could take place sooner at highway intersections and in urban areas.

Adjacent landowners who plan to mow non-interstate ditches for hay should do so before the state mows these areas. Private mowing is not allowed in medians of four-lane highways.

We're seeing tent caterpillar activity across the region, with some trees already showing noticeable defoliation. Eastern tent caterpillars build silky tents in branch crotches and commonly feed on chokecherry, apple, crabapple and cherry trees. Forest tent caterpillars, another common defoliator, don't build tents but can feed on many deciduous trees and shrubs.

Before you panic, remember that healthy, established trees can usually tolerate a season of feeding and recover. However, young, newly planted or stressed trees may be more vulnerable.

What can you do?
- Remove tents by hand when caterpillars are inside during cool weather or in the evening.
-Consider Bt products when caterpillars are small and actively feeding.
- Burning the tent and caterpillars is not recommended....it can do more damage to the tree.

The sooner you act, the better, tent caterpillars will continue feeding through June.
