Tonight, we’ll host a community forum at Century High School to give residents an opportunity to learn more about the facilities plan that will be in front of voters on November 3. The forum will begin at 7pm.

We’ll walk through the proposed projects, explain what has changed since June, discuss the estimated tax impact and answer questions from the community.

The revised $116.5 million plan focuses on four priorities: keeping students safe, creating better learning spaces, expanding student opportunities and preserving our investment in the schools our community has already built.

Whether you’ve followed this process closely or are just starting to learn about the proposal, we want you to have the information you need and an opportunity to ask questions.

Congratulations to Students in Transition Coordinator Sherrice Roness for receiving the Bridges of Hope award from the Dream Center Bismarck at their Legacy Builders Breakfast today!

Sherrice, a licensed social worker with around 25 years of experience, has worked at BPS for over a decade and supports students experiencing homelessness by ensuring they have access to meals, education, essential services, and more. One question we hear is why the district doesn't simply divide the $116.5 million facilities plan into smaller pieces and complete the work over the next decade.

There is a cost to waiting.

For illustration, if we divided today's $116.5 million of work into three equal parts, one completed now, one in 2030 and one in 2036, and assumed construction costs increased 5% annually, the same work would cost approximately $149 million.

That's about $33 million more to complete the same projects.

Of course, no one knows exactly what construction inflation will be over the next decade. This example isn't a prediction. It simply illustrates an important part of the discussion: spreading projects over a longer period doesn't necessarily reduce what taxpayers ultimately pay. It can shift those costs into the future, when the same work may be more expensive.

And that calculation doesn't account for additional repairs or building needs that could emerge while projects wait.

As our community considers the facilities plan, we want residents to understand both the cost of doing the work and the potential cost of waiting.
