September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Prostate cancer remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among men, and the way it is screened for has changed considerably in recent years.

“Men are now being offered more comfortable and advanced options to receive prostate cancer screenings,” said Jeffrey Nix, M.D., section chief of Urologic Oncology and professor in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Urology.

Screening is generally recommended beginning at age 55, and as early as 40 to 45 for those at higher risk, including men with a family history of prostate cancer.

This prestigious appointment recognizes the significance and potential impact of her PARITY research project and supports her continued development as an independent women's health researcher.

Congratulations to Carmen Tong, D.O., and her team on receiving a 2026–28 Medical Education Innovation Award from the UAB Heersink School of Medicine.

The award will support supplies for engineering students and manikin models as the team develops ultrasound-compatible models to teach students how to differentiate between testicular anomalies, including torsion.

The project builds on an ongoing collaboration among the UAB Department of Urology, the UAB School of Engineering, and the pediatric simulation center at Children's of Alabama.

Bellamy Davis, MPH, PA-C, is helping expand access to urologic care across Alabama.
