Alabama School Connection This page is being kept active by Trisha Powell Crain, senior education reporter at Alabama Daily News and Alabama Public Television.

The Alabama School Connection, founded in 2009, is no longer operating independently. The ASC is devoted to shining a light on the Alabama K-12 system in an effort to enhance discussion about our schools among parents, teachers, students, educational administrators, policymakers and legislators. The ASC believes that if all stakeholders speak a common language and engage in the discussion of issues surrounding and facing our public schools, our public schools will be made stronger.

Back-to-school season often brings renewed attention to student attendance. The latest NAEP long-term trend assessments offer a snapshot about student attendance for 9- and 13-year-olds in 2025.

When 9-year-olds took the reading assessment, 48% reported not being absent in the previous month. The average score for those students was 225. Smaller percentages of students reported missing 1 or more days in the previous month. The average score for students who missed more than 10 days in the previous month was 188.

I'll do a deep dive over the weekend, but the scores, while somewhat flat overall, show big improvement in some unexpected schools and districts. Take a look.

Alabama Daily News analyzed the latest results, with searchable district and school tables included later in this story so readers can look up local proficiency and poverty rates.
