Amidst concerns that the shortage of doctors will become even more acute, a record number of students applied to and enrolled this fall in medical schools across the U.S.
The Association of American Medical Colleges reports that the total number of medical school applicants for this year (48,014) grew by 6.1 percent from 2012.
Even more interesting was the record number of students who enrolled in their first year of medical school, up 3% from 20,000 to 20,044.

Do you know about ePearls? Provided by our sister company, Practical Reviews, ePearls is a FREE, weekly e-newsletter, with an downloadable audio podcast, highlighting a relevant topic in the field of medicine, surgery and dentistry.
Here are synopsis of last week’s newsletters:
MEDICINE:
Topic: Not So Sweet News That Elevated Glucose Levels May Increase Risk of Dementia
Background: Diabetes appears to be a risk factor for developing dementia, but whether higher glucose levels increase the risk for dementia in persons without diabetes is unknown.
Objective: To explore the association between glucose levels and risk of dementia in individuals without diabetes.
Conclusion: Even in the absence of diabetes, higher glucose levels may increase the risk of developing dementia.
SURGERY:
Topic: Surgery Outperforms Physiotherapy for Women With Stress Urinary Incontinence
Background: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is often treated initially with pelvic physiotherapy, and if improvement is adequate or symptoms recur, women are then referred for midurethral-sling surgery. Women with more severe symptoms at presentation are more likely to fail physiotherapy and may be better served by proceeding directly with surgery. Data comparing surgery with physiotherapy as initial treatments for SUI are lacking.
Objective: To compare initial midurethral-sling surgery with initial physiotherapy in women with moderate to severe SUI on subjective and objective improvement at 1 year.
Conclusion: Women with moderate to severe stress urinary incontinence have higher rates of improvement and cure with initial mid-urethral sling surgery compared to initial pelvic physiotherapy.
DENTAL:
Topic: Resin Infiltration Is the Best Treatment for WSLs After Orthodontic Appliance Removal
Background: {White spot lesions (WSLs) are seen frequently around fixed orthodontic appliances, and can regress up to 3 months after appliance removal. However, most WSLs show minimal regression and a white spot remains. There are many treatment options for WSLs.}
Objective: To determine the esthetic improvement and changes in the area of WSLs treated with resin infiltration.
Conclusion: Resin infiltration significantly improved the clinical appearance of white spot lesions and reduced their size.

Realizing that most heart attack patients are treated by emergency doctors and not cardiologists, a toolkit has been created by the Acute Cardiovascular Care Association to help improve survival of these patients at the most critical stage.
The kit is a small-sized reference manual for doctors who need to make life or death decisions in seconds. Acute coronary syndromes are still a leading cause of death and disability worldwide and particularly in Europe.
