Meet Aareal 🌟

Before anything else, before the academics, the field trips, the college visits, Breakthrough Birmingham is a safe place. And for some scholars, that matters more than anything.

Aareal Dixon knows that. As a second year Teaching Fellow from Stillman College, she shows up every summer not just to teach but to remind every scholar in her classroom that they matter. That nothing is out of reach. That anything is possible, and that she is living proof.

A bridge. That’s what Breakthrough Birmingham is to so many scholars. A bridge between where they are and where they have every right to go.

As a second year Teaching Fellow at Talladega College, Bruna Tuck has seen it firsthand. Students stepping into opportunities they never had before. Kids who walked in unsure of their future walking out believing in it. Scholars realizing that where you come from doesn’t have to define where you’re headed.

In her second year as a Breakthrough Birmingham Teaching Fellow, Gabrielle Cheramie shows up every summer to do one thing: help scholars see a bigger future for themselves. She encourages, she supports, and she stays in it long enough to watch doubt turn into belief.

That kind of growth? It doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because people like Gabrielle choose to show up 🩵

Ever wonder who trains the teaching fellows?

Our Instructional Coaches! Real, experienced teachers who bring their classroom expertise straight into Breakthrough Birmingham’s summer program. From day one, they’re training our Teaching Fellows on everything it takes to run a rigorous, engaging classroom. Lesson planning. Classroom management. Data analysis. All of it.

And they don’t disappear after orientation. All summer long, ICs are in the classrooms, observing, giving feedback, reviewing lesson plans, and mentoring Fellows on both their teaching and their relationships with scholars.

Because great teaching doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built.
