“State of The Black Student” (K-12)

From IEPs to Suspensions… We Need to Talk.

Black students are being identified for special education at higher rates, but once they are — they’re often under-served, marginalized, or even pushed out through suspensions and early exits from services.

According to an analysis by the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama, Black students make up ~33% of Alabama’s student population, yet account for ~60% of all reported disciplinary incidents.

It’s not just about the numbers. It’s about the “why” and “what” we’re going to do about it.

Let’s ask the questions:

➡️Are Black students’ needs truly being met?

➡️Why are they more likely to be suspended or disciplined harshly?

➡️Are supports being taken away too soon?

➡️Who’s making these decisions — and with what data?

Join Empowered Birmingham for a critical community conversation as we unpack disparities in IEPs, discipline, and access to meaningful support for Black students. Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, educator, student, or advocate; 💪🏽your voice matters.
