Last week, our scholars in the Academy of Law attended Oral Arguments before the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals held at Samford University. The event was sponsored by the Birmingham Bar Foundation. This was followed by lunch on campus with presentations from the Cumberland School of Law Admissions Office and Ambassadors. Students also participated in a discussion with the Dean of Cumberland, Blake Hudson and toured the Law School and library. Students thoroughly enjoyed this experience and left energized and enthusiastic about a career in the legal profession!

Special thanks to representatives from the Birmingham Bar Foundation and Cumberland School of Law for making this possible.

We had a very special guest speaker in the Law Academy today! Ramsay’s very own Athletic Director, Coach John Benjamin, shared his expertise on the topic of Sports Law. πŸˆβšΎοΈπŸ€

Our scholars were very engaged and even argued back and forth on some of the topics and court cases discussed. We truly have future attorneys in the making. βš–οΈπŸ“š

Students in Mrs. Lillie’s Introduction to Criminal Justic class attended the Minority Pre-Law Conference today at Birmingham Southern College sponsored by the Alabama State Bar Young Lawyers Section.

Students participated in a mock trial, received valuable information from practicing attorneys about the law school journey, and listened to a panel discussion with judges and attorneys. They also attended a luncheon with keynote speaker, Judge Ruby Davis!

There are great things happening on the hill! Students in Mrs. Lillie’s Introduction to Criminal Justice class are gearing up for a law debate. Their debate topic: Drug use should be treated as a health issue and not a criminal justice issue. We can’t wait to hear our scholars’ positions! Keep soaring!! πŸ“šπŸ‘©πŸ½β€πŸ’»πŸ“–πŸ“

In November 2008, Judge Shanta Owens was elected to the bench to serve as a District Judge in the criminal division for the 10th Judicial Circuit of Alabama. She is the presiding judge for the drug court program for the Birmingham Division of Jefferson County, a rehabilitation program for nonviolent drug offenders who want to live drug free lives.

Judge Shera Grant became a district court judge in January 2016. Prior to taking the bench, she practiced in a variety of areas. Immediately following law school, she practiced as a prosecutor with the City of Atlanta and the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office. Both of the Birmingham natives graduated from Alabama State University. Both graduated from law school at Louisiana State University. While Grant went to Atlanta after law school, Owens came back to Birmingham and both ended up with jobs as prosecutors.
Judge Owens and Judge Grant are 1995 Ramsay High School graduates. The sisters hold the distinction of being the first and only set of identical twins to serve simultaneously as state court judges in Jefferson County, Alabama.
