Paola attended ESL class every Saturday to develop her conversational English skills. As a stay-at-home mom, she spends so much time taking care of others that our class offered her an opportunity to invest in herself.

Weekly, she brought so much joy and humor to class. Her learning style embraced joy - she believed in having a good time while practicing new skills. This made class enjoyable not just for her, but for everyone, and helped build a strong classroom community.

This week's Tuesday Testimonial features Anthony, a former 2024 student!

For six months, Anthony attended English class to further develop his English language skills. There, Anthony was able to practice speaking and listening exercises in an environment created to support him and other learners who shared his goal. Anthony's willingness to attend and participate helped him to continuously grow his English language proficiency and his overall confidence too!

Anthony is a role model for all adult learners. His dedication shows that it is never too late to learn or practice a skill.

Tea-Cup Cafe LLC started as a simple graduate school assignment: teach a class to adult learners for one semester.
Seems straightforward, right?

When I reached out to a local public library in San Leandro, CA to partner with their English language program, I discovered they didn't have one but there was a need for one in the community.

To meet my degree requirements, I partnered with the library and created two in-person ESL classes (beginner and intermediate) in early 2024. To spread the word, I posted flyers at the library, advertising free Saturday sessions for any adult wanting to practice English with an experienced instructor.

The first day? No one showed up.
I was crushed. But I didn't give up.

Gradually, over the next few weeks, people began trickling in. First one student, then two, then three. I was elated—even helping one person felt worth it. Then, something even more surprising happened.

Word spread. My class of three grew to 30 students in just a few months.

What was supposed to be a one-semester requirement turned into a full year of service to the San Leandro community. The library even hired my colleagues to create additional small classes for more personalized instruction.

That experience taught me the power of creating accessible learning opportunities for adults and how there needs to be more of them.

Now, Tea-Cup Cafe has evolved into an online platform so we can serve learners everywhere, not just one community.
