The Breathing Corner 🌊
A Breathing Corner is more than a cozy cushion in the corner of a room. It’s a safe place to retreat, breathe, and reset during difficult moments.
When children feel overwhelmed, frustrated, worried, or simply need a break, the Breathing Corner gives them something important: permission to pause.
This space is not a punishment or a “time-out.” Think of it as a Safe Zone. When a child chooses the Breathing Corner, we respect their space and give them time to settle before expecting them to problem-solve, talk, or return to the group.
Keep it simple. Add a comfortable cushion, a few breathing prompts, and familiar books children can quietly explore. I like including Breathe & Stretch on the Beach and Powerful You! Primary so children have familiar tools for breathing, movement, self-talk, and social-emotional learning.
Most importantly, teach children how to use the space before they need it. Visit it together. Practice taking a breath there. Talk about when they might choose to go and how they will know when they are ready to return.
Over time, the message becomes:
I can pause.
I can breathe.
I can reset.
And I can try again.
That’s the real purpose of a Breathing Corner—not to make difficult feelings disappear, but to help children discover that they have tools to move through them.
It starts with you. It ripples out.
