Scioto Brush Creek: Watershed Conservation in a Rural Community

Scioto Brush Creek is a tributary to the lower Scioto River and drains portions of Adams and Scioto Counties. Known for its exceptional warmwater habitat and virtually intact fish fauna, this stream is currently being considered as the next State Scenic River in Ohio. This presentation will tell the story of how the Friends of Scioto Brush Creek originated the actions they took to involve the community in the conservation of this fabulous stream.

Martin is a founding Board Member and Past President of the Friends of Scioto Brush Creek, Inc., and has worked in conservation for over 40 years. Much of his career was with the Ohio Department of Natural Resourcesment of Natural Resources as a naturalist, land manager, and administrator. Martin now serves as the Community Engagement Specialist for The Nature Conservancy’s 23,000-acre Edge of Appalachia Nature Preserve in Adams County.

The mission of FoSBC is to maintain and improve the water quality of Scioto Brush Creek through education, awareness and involvement of local residents. Founded 1997, Non-profit status in 2006.

Join us at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, for an insightful program by Ohio’s State Director for The Nature Conservancy, Bill Stanley. During this session, Bill will explore the fascinating micro-climates found across Ohio and examine how these unique environments are responding to the challenges posed by climate change. You may be surprised by the dynamic changes occurring within these micro-ecosystems and their implications for conservation efforts.

We are so excited to welcome Rebecca McMackin to the Bexley Public Library on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.

Rebecca is currently Lead Horticulturist for the American Horticultural Society, an Associate with the Harvard Divinity School’s Thinking with Plants and Fungi Initiative, and Consulting Arboretum Curator for Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, NY.

Gone are the days when a garden could be ornamental alone. We now recognize the impact that our land care practices have on the ecosystems around us, and can see the importance of encouraging biodiversity. Thankfully, we do not need to sacrifice beauty when we invite butterflies and songbirds into our gardens.

Rebecca has cultivated gorgeous landscapes in the toughest environments possible: urban parks, school playgrounds, and the sidewalks of New York City. She will take lessons from her work at Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Brooklyn Museum, and decades of research to share how those of us who are fortunate enough to care for land, can do it beautifully and ecologically.

Thank you to so many of you who have registered to attend our author visit with Zoë Schlanger on Wednesday, March 5, at 1:15 pm., at the Bexley Public Library. We look forward to seeing you and wanted to share some additional information with you.

Registration is now full with a waiting list. If your situation has changed and you are no longer able to attend in person, we appreciate you letting the library know at your earliest convenience so that we can accommodate those on our wait list. If you are unable to make it to the library but still want to view Wednesday's event, we will be live streaming on BPL's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcVW0PSJM5A.

The doors to the library auditorium will open at 12:45 pm and we encourage you to arrive early to find parking and take your seats. We will begin promptly at 1:15 pm with a brief, special announcement regarding Bexley Public Library’s newest collection.

In addition to the Library’s Parking lot located on the east side of the building, on-street parking is available on the surrounding streets like Euclaire and Mound. Parking restrictions have also been lifted at Capital University, so you may park in the S lots (S1 & S2) as well. I’ve attached a map for your reference.
