Success has a system—let’s learn it one letter at a time.
This week: 'D is for Dexterity'
When we think about dexterity in an academic sense, it’s easy to focus only on fine motor skills. However, dexterity isn’t just about handwriting—it’s about how confidently students can express their thinking through writing, problem-solve using manipulatives, and create abstract models to explain their learning.
Academic success depends on a student’s ability to do something with what they know. That might look like writing a clear explanation, building a model, organizing data, or using tools to test an idea. These hands-on and expressive skills help students move beyond memorization and into real understanding.
Dexterity develops through intentional practice, feedback, and opportunities to interact with content in different ways. When students are encouraged to write, build, model, and revise, they strengthen both their thinking and their confidence across subjects.
To start this conversation with your student (or yourself), try this question: In what ways does your student get to show what they know—through writing, hands-on work, or creative problem-solving?

Success has a system—let’s learn it one letter at a time.
This week: 'C is for Consistency'
Consistency is the practice of showing up—for yourself and for others—again and again, no matter what.
When it comes to habits and behaviors, the things we do most consistently have the greatest impact on our outcomes. Both in the classroom and at home, students benefit from positive consistency from the adults in their lives. Learning to show up, stay engaged, and participate—even when things feel hard—builds confidence, resilience, and trust.
The key word here is positive. It’s easy to be consistent about playing a video game every day, keeping a streak with a friend, or asking for the newest pair of Js when they drop—but how do those habits move you closer to your goals?
Instead, students should focus on small, achievable actions that align with what they want to accomplish. Consistency doesn’t mean perfection; it means continuing to show up, setting boundaries, and making progress—even when motivation fades.
To start this conversation with your student (or yourself), try this question: Based on what I want to achieve, what’s one action I need to be consistent about to make that happen?

'B is for Boundaries'
Boundaries are the limits we set in place to ensure that our goals are protected - and eventually, met.
Many students struggle not because they can’t do the work, but because distractions, overcommitment, or unclear expectations take over. Strong boundaries help students manage their time, stay focused, and avoid burnout.
Boundaries might look like:
• Designated homework and play time
• Putting the phone away during studying and when in class
• Knowing when to ask for help and advocate for yourself
• Saying no to distractions (including peers) that don’t serve their goals
Boundaries aren’t about restriction—they’re about supporting success. If you want some help starting this conversation with your student (or yourself), start with this question: What’s one boundary that could make school (and/or life) feel more manageable right now?

In 2026, what's one way that y'all are getting aligned? As a bonus - if you feel comfortable doing so - drop an aspiration down below if you need some help brainstorming how to align your actions to your goal! 💪🏿🧠

'A is for Alignment'
Alignment means that your goals, actions, and effort are all working together in order to reach a certain level of achievement.
Many students say they want better grades—but their habits don’t always match that goal. Missing assignments, disorganization, or rushing through work can cause misalignment. When students are able to get aligned, school feels less stressful and more manageable. Being aligned also helps indicate to teachers that students have goals they are trying to reach, thus making it imperative that instructional objectives are tailored precisely to students’ needs.
Alignment is something that should be practiced intentionally with students; not something they’re expected to “just know.” If you want some help starting this conversation with your student (or yourself), start with this question: What’s one goal you have right now—and what habits support it?

Introducing: Learn the ABCs of Success
Over the next 26 weeks, I’ll be sharing a weekly series called “Learn the ABCs of Success.”
Each week, we’ll focus on one letter of the alphabet and a key skill or mindset that helps students succeed in school — not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well.
As a middle school teacher, I’ve seen that success isn’t just about being “smart.” It’s also about building habits, practicing accountability, and fostering consistency.
These short reflections are meant to spark conversations at home and help students build skills they can carry into any classroom.
This week, we’re starting with 'A for Alignment.' Stay tuned each week for the next letter!

Many of you know who I am, where I have been in life, and what I am currently up to. Many of you have also been there with me along the way! However, in my years of teaching (and simply living), I have learned the importance of communication and reiteration to let those around me know what I stand for, the things I am passionate about, and the value that I bring to the operation - whatever it may be. If you couldn't tell, me and education go hand-in-hand! 🤓🙏🏿
What is something you are passionate about? Let me know down in the comments! 👇🏿
