Justice Sotomayor visits Rosa Parks Elementary | Berkeleyside 02/09/2011

In addition to being pioneers for the planet, these same students are also part of a Spanish language immersion program that is so impressive it prompted a visit from Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor just last week!

How do we get these kids gets an audition for "America's got talent" anyway? :-)

Justice Sotomayor visits Rosa Parks Elementary | Berkeleyside Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor paid a surprise visit to Rosa Parks Elementary School in West Berkeley this morning. Sotomayor is in Berkeley to judge a moot court competition at the University of California Berkeley Law School, Boalt Hall, this evening. The competition has been move

Green Schools Initiative : Index 02/09/2011

Planut volunteered today for a great project called the Green Schools certification program (think Green Business program, but for schools) lead by Deborah Moore and Susan Silber. First graders from the Rosa Parks Elementary School here in Berkeley were encouraged to put their auditor caps on and evaluate their own classrooms for energy efficiency.

The Packers of Green Bay may have Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers, but today the Planuts of the greenest Bay anywhere in the world just added Kate Neal to our team. Most of us can't win a Super Bowl, but we can all go super nuts for the planet! If you run into Kate, just ask her how.

Trees For Tomorrow - natural resources education - environmental education - specialty schools 11/23/2010

During a recent trip home to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Planut got acquainted with a natural resources specialty school called Trees For Tomorrow. Nestled away in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, Trees For Tomorrow has been offering environmental education to students, teachers, adults, seniors, and others since 1944.

You really have to see their school with your own eyes just to appreciate the awesome commitment they're making to teaching students about conservation values and contemporary resource management. They have their own campus which over 5,000 people attend annually for 3-day workshops throughout the year.

If you're a school or classroom and you're looking for the ultimate environmental educational experience, check out their website and contact Maggie Bishop for more info ([email protected]). After a visit to Eagle River, WI, it's not hard to see why TFT attracts people from all over the country and why the impressions they leave with their attendees last a lifetime.

Green Festival - Home 11/08/2010

The best part of the green festival in San Francisco is... the people. Like Lara from Palo Alto, who reserved the 10th "like" spot on our FB page, whose grandson was born on 10/10/10 - a very special day for Planut too. Since connecting Planut with Berkleyians on 10-10-10 we've gotten 25 people per week to start tracking their resource consumption with us. Yeah, those aren't whopping numbers but 9 years ago, the Green Festival wasn't exactly the nutty party it is today either.

Here's to Michael from Alliance for Climate Education (www.acespace.org), Earth Friends (www.theearthfriends.com), Carmen from New Learning Culture (www.newlearningculture.com), Bridget from Trash-Mash-Up (www.trashmashup.org), Kim from Sungevity (www.sungevity.com), Garth from Mt. Diablo Nursery & Garden (mtdiablonursery.com), John and Aliza from Classic Green Designs (www.classicgreendesigns.com) and Ian from Cal-Earth (http://calearth.org) for helping to make Green Festival the premiere sustainability event in America.

The Story of Stuff 10/27/2010

Planut got a sneak peek of The Story of Electronics today, which was pre-screened here at the David Brower Center. Another excellent offshoot from the popular Story of Stuff short which now has 12 million views and counting!

The Story of Electronics will be released on November 9, so stop by www.storyofstuff.org and be the first to get on board with the "take back" movement, coming soon to a nation near you. Thanks to The Story of Stuff Project team, Allison Cook & Renee Shade for the invite, and an acorn cap tip to the animation folks from Free Range Studios located right here in the nutty zone - Berkeley!

The Story of Stuff LOOP SCOOPS are short, funny videos to get kids thinking about the stuff in their lives and what this stuff can do to the environment. Each SCOOP tells the story of something kids use or see everyday — a juice box, a magazine, an electronic gadget, a glass of juice, a pile of garbage. Our goal is

gather restaurant - home 10/21/2010

Gather restaurant added a delightful flavor to the East Bay Green Drinks networking event tonight at the Brower Center. After 3 experiences now with Gather, it's safe to say Planut has a favorite restaurant in Berkeley. Thanks to the Sustainable Business Alliance (SBA), as usual, for giving people with a passion for the green economy a place to connect.

gather restaurant - home Gather is a restaurant, café and organic bar with an outdoor patio in Downtown Berkeley. Walk-ins welcome. Reservations available: 510-809-0400.

Ecology Center 10/20/2010

Planut wraps up an awesome workshop series tonight called "Climate Action" at the Ecology Center on San Pablo. If you've never checked out their website, the Ecology Center pretty much does it all and has it all when it comes to sustainable living. They're an amazing resource. Oh, and the new super cool curbside recycling bins that rolled out last week? Yup, those were the work of the Ecology Center too. They've been going nuts for the planet since 1969 - before Planut was even a twinkle in Mother Oak's eyes!

Ecology Center The Ecology Center promotes environmentally and socially responsible practices through programs that educate, demonstrate, and provide direct services.

10/14/2010

Planut is heading to the Berkeley Youth Alternatives event, "Farm, Film & Flava," for an inspirational evening.

10/10/2010

There ain't no party like a 10/10 party, because a 10/10 party don't stop! Hooray, we've finally introducing Planut to the general public. We're tried, tested and guru approved. After rolling up your sleeves today we appreciate you joining the after-party, right here!
