Aileen Calverley

Ray Wong Toi Yeung

Ray Wong is a prominent Hong Kong activist based in Berlin, Germany, where he made history as the first Hong Kong activist to be granted political asylum in a European country. He currently serves as the Policy and Strategy Advisor for Hong Kong Watch, a leading international NGO focused on monitoring human rights in Hong Kong. Ray is the board chair of Freiheit für Hongkong e.V., a German nonprofit dedicated to advocating for Hong Kong’s freedom, and the Deputy Secretary-General of the European Hong Kong Diaspora Alliance, where he collaborates with the European Hong Kong diaspora community.

Aileen Calverley

Aileen Calverley, Co-Founder and Chair of Hong Kong Watch, and has been contributing to the establishment of BNOs rights in the UK and supporting Canada’s lifeboat scheme, the HK Pathway program. Aileen regularly provides testimony to the Canadian Parliament on topics such as Mandatory Provident Fund

#大埔火災

【12/05】Tai Po Fire Vigil @ Berkeley

11月26日於大埔宏福苑的大火，造成至少146罹難者。此為香港近代史前無例的火災，引起大眾對建工程偷工減料及貪腐之合理懷疑，而相關政府部門曾對居民投訴欠缺跟進行動，為管理上的嚴重疏忽。以上種種指明是次悲劇，是人禍，而非天災。

12月5日星期五夜晚六時半，柏克萊加州大學香港事務組織將聯同灣區其他港人組織，包括柏克萊加州大學香港學生會、 灣區香港人社區中心、北加州香港會、聖荷西香港學生會、及史丹福香港學生會，於UC Berkeley Sather Gate舉行悼念會。

悼念會將會設有靜坐默哀、獻花、連儂牆等環節。主辦亦會儘量提供有限鮮花、蠟燭、及黑絲帶別針。誠邀各位有心人出席，悼念逝者、支持香港的各位受災同胞。

最後，物資有限，鼓勵各位來賓自備蠟燭、鮮花、標語牌等。

On November 26, a fire at Wang F*k Court in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district took more than 146 lives away in an unprecedented disaster in the city’s contemporary history. The gross negligence of the construction company towards public safety has created this manmade disaster.

On Friday December 5 6:30pm, in collaboration with Bay Area HKCC, UC Berkeley HKSA, SJSU HKSA, NorCal HK Club and Stanford HKSA, Hong Kong Affairs Association of Berkeley will be hosting a memorial in front of Sather Gate at UC Berkeley campus.

There will be a silent sit-in, floral tribute and a Lennon wall for writing messages. There will be limited white chrysanthemums, candles and black ribbons for mourning. We invite you to express your grief, prayers and hopes to mourn those lost in the tragedy.

Finally, resources are limited. We encourage you to bring candles, flowers, banners etc.

We stand by the expression of the will of the people, as represented by this petition, a testament to collective mobilization and social mourning.

Once the state has crossed the threshold into politicization, the entire discourse turns political, and space for discourse shrinks once more. Let us abide by the original spirit of the four demands: to ask for change because it is right and to do justice to those lost in this manmade tragedy.

【11/22】BLUE ISLAND 憂鬱之島  

2019年的反送中運動，是一場改變香港命運的運動。百萬人上街，以公民抗命的方式爭取各種民主自治訴求。 脫離議論式的訪談評論，陳梓桓導演的《憂鬱之島》結合了劇情同紀錄片的元素，透過分為三個不同年代中國和香港發生的重大政治事件和代表人物，由2010年代的香港年輕學生重演以往的歷史時刻。《憂鬱之島》在第59屆金馬獎最佳紀錄片提名。

在反送中6年之際，柏克萊加州大學香港事務組織將《憂鬱之島》帶到三藩市灣區，邀請各位一起回顧這段屬於香港人的歷史。與此同時，我們榮幸邀請到特別嘉賓作映後分享。

The 2019 Hong Kong Anti Extradition Protests were a movement that changed Hong Kong’s path. Millions of people took to the streets, and enacted civil disobedience to demand democracy, among other calls for systematic change in Hong Kong. It went on to be nominated for best documentary at the 59th Golden Horse Film Awards. 

6 years after the Umbrella Revolution, the Hong Kong Affairs Association of Berkeley (HKAAB) would like to bring this documentary to be screened in the San Francisco Bay Area and we cordially invite everybody to learn more about this historic moment for Hong Kongers and democracy movements in the 21st century. We are also honored to have a special guest join us to share their thoughts and personal experiences after the screening.

In Wong Kar Wai’s Happy Together, this recurring line sets in motion the cycle of renewal and dissolution that characterizes 何寶榮 and 黎耀輝’s turbulent relationship. Set in Argentina, a distant land far from home in Hong Kong, Happy Together puts to question: can a couple burdened by the weight of history, desire and displacement truly start again?

Join us as we return to Argentina nearly 30 years ago, accompanied by the nostalgic rock of the American 80s and the seducing refrains of Argentinian tango. An icon of Asian lgbtq cinema, the film simultaneously sits at the juncture of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong that defined the city's history and future. The screening will be preceded by an introduction of the theme of exile from home and the social history of lgbtq identity in East Asia.
