Last Friday, 5 Turner students completed the 2026 Summer Rock Internship program by sharing about their experiences and the knowledge gained at the graduation ceremony. Rock Internship is a paid, 6-week summer earn and learn opportunity for upcoming seniors that pairs students with employers in the career pathway students are considering after graduation. It provides an outstanding chance for students to get a head start on their career planning.

Congratulations to Ella Wood, Will Erickson, Wyatt Bennett, Jaxton Winiarski, and Akelalyn Laursen for being selected for this program. The work you completed and connections you made will benefit your futures!

This summer, Turner High School students had the opportunity to participate in Mural Camp! During camp, students led a project to complete a mural in the calm-down room at Powers Elementary. This included planning, designing, and painting a custom mural for the space.

The goal was to create a calming scene that would brighten the room while still showing off some Panda Pride! These are some of the progress photos from along the way, as well as the finished mural.

The students were super grateful for this experience, and we couldn't be more proud of the work they accomplished. We hope the next few generations of Powers students enjoy this mural as much as we enjoyed creating it!

We are proud to share that our District Nurse, Erin Bown, recently had the opportunity to present at the National Association of School Nurses Conference, sharing her expertise on our Thrive and Revive mental health initiative with school nurses from across the country. This was a wonderful opportunity to highlight the great work happening in our district, collaborate with colleagues nationwide, and contribute to advancing student health and the school nursing profession.

Summer is not stopping Turner students from reaching for their career goals. Turner students have begun their Youth Apprenticeship (YA) positions for the 2026-2027 school year already.

Aidan Moore is a carpentry YA with JP Cullen, helping to work on the Children’s Museum site in Janesville. Aidan will work for JP Cullen through the summer and school year, earning high school credit while completing paid work to help him get a head start on his career.

Congratulations to Ryland McKinney (Class of 2026), Isaac Anderson (11th Grade), and Zachary King (11th Grade), who completed the Accelerated Industrial Maintenance (AIM) program at Blackhawk Technical College on Thursday, July 2nd! AIM is part of Wisconsin’s Worker Advancement Initiative, which emphasizes hands-on learning and classroom training to help individuals build skills and advance their careers.

The four-week program includes completing 3 classes at Blackhawk Tech in Safety, Mechanics of Learning, and Troubleshooting, as well as area employer visits to Scot Forge, United Alloy, Stoughton Trailers, Prent, and The Morse Group. The program culminates with student presentations on what they learned.

We are proud of the efforts of these students and appreciate the generosity of area business partners, Blackhawk Technical College, and the Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board in helping them prepare for their futures in manufacturing.

Check out the new Career Pathway banners! Each banner represents one of the 6 career clusters that are the focus of Turner’s Career Ready work with students. The clusters and the 14 pathways within them are the focus areas for each year’s career panels. Our goal is to help students familiarize themselves with each pathway to help them take steps toward career readiness while still in high school.

The regional Career Pathway grant’s Collaborative Council, which included the Workforce Development Board of Southcentral Wisconsin, Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board, MadREP, CESAs 2, 5, and 6, and Education Works, LLC, Jefferson County School-to-Work Consortium, provided funds for the banners which were created by the Workforce Development Board of Southcentral Wisconsin, by their staff, with input from the above committee members.

Tony Gonzales is a machining YA at Specialty Tools in Beloit. Specialty Tools (https://specialtytoolsinc.com/) manufactures carbide cutting tools for multiple industries. Tony will work for Specialty Tools through the summer and school year, earning high school credit while completing paid work to help him get a head start on his career.

5 Turner students were selected to take part in the Rock Internship program. The Rock Internship is a paid, six-week high school internship program made possible through a partnership between Blackhawk Technical College, Rock County, and the Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board (SWWDB). This program allows students to complete a career exploration experience, develop valuable workplace skills, and gain insight into future career paths. Attending signing day this year are Ella Wood (Beloit Chamber), Will Erickson (Batterman), and Akelalyn Laursen (Welty Center). Also participating at Jaxton Winiarski (UWW IT) and Wyatt Bennett (Frito-Lay).

Other Turner students are taking part in the Accelerated Industrial Maintenance (AIM) Program at Blackhawk Technical College. In partnership with SWWDB, this program allows students to earn OSHA 30 training and tour several manufacturing partners, including Frito-Lay, The Morse Group, Scot Forge, Prent Corporation, United Alloy, and Stoughton Trailers, LLC, to learn about the products they make. Students in this program will also complete 3 credits of coursework at BTC.
