In this plant identification condensed summer course, Abe Lloyd and his students spend eight days together, exploring seven unique wetlands in Whatcom and Skagit counties over the course of three weeks.

Salmon are jumping in Whatcom Creek 🐟 But what kind are they, and what are they doing here?

Every fall, Pacific salmon return from the ocean to local streams to spawn. Professor Jim Helfield breaks down the salmon you may be spotting around Bellingham, why they return to their home streams and how their life cycle supports the entire stream ecosystem.

Algae-produced waxes could have a future in everything from alternative fuels to cosmetics.

For more than a decade, chemistry professor Greg O’Neil has been studying alkenones, waxes produced by algae that could have many applications. Now, WWU chemistry students and researchers have developed a faster, easier way to identify and measure them using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).
