Sehome Canoe Co. Sehome Canoe made up of a group of students who are learning about composite manufacturing at Sehome High School.

Sehome Canoe is now building it's third canoe and first surf ski. The purpose of this page is simply to update those who are interested in hearing about our learning process.

This what "infusion" looks like: Start with carbon/kevlar/vectran fabric and lay it in the mold dry, add a release fabric (teal), add plastic film and sealant tape, add tubing, add vacuum, and finally, add resin. The set up took 5 hrs. The infusion took only 30 minutes. Thanks to Calvin Collander for his mad video skills, and the guys at Janicki Industries--they are the heroes. Hi, Ross.

This is what we learned from Wikipedia about Vectran:
It's a fiber that is spun from a liquid crystal polymer. It's strong, and resists abrasion and UV degradation. It's used in performance rope, tires, shoes, and space suits. It ought to make some nice canoes. Hey, Jake.

We weighed the hull. It was under 20 pounds! After paint, trim, seats, and floatation the boat will still be under 40 pounds. That makes is one of the lightest boats available.
