When Being the Strong One Starts Costing You Yourself

You’re the one people count on. The one who remembers what needs to happen. The one who finds the solution. The one who keeps moving when everyone else is overwhelmed. And somewhere along the way, being dependable can quietly become believing, **“Everything depends on me.”**

Today’s VybeShift Podcast, **“I Feel That Everything Depends on Me,”** explores what happens when responsibility stops being something you carry and starts becoming something you live inside. Because underneath all that pressure may be an even deeper realization:

**When was the last time you felt like yourself—not the fixer, provider, problem-solver, or person holding everything together…just you?**

Start with today’s episode: **bit.ly/4sPpC3H**

And if that conversation leaves you recognizing, *“I’ve been carrying so much that I don’t feel like myself anymore,”* follow that recognition one step deeper.

**VSP #6: “I Don’t Feel Like Myself Anymore”** was created for exactly that place—not to give you another thing to accomplish, but to help you reconnect with the person underneath all the responsibility.

Maybe the next step isn’t learning how to carry more.

Maybe it’s finding your way back to yourself.

Sometimes the moment of recognition is simple: you realize you’ve become so good at being what everyone needs that you’re no longer sure who you are beneath all of it.

That experience is at the center of two new VybeShift releases today.

A new episode of **The Stage Podcast** explores the habit of waiting for life to settle down before allowing ourselves to feel better, be present, or reconnect with who we are.

And today’s new VybeShift Blog, **“I’ve Become So Good at Being What Everyone Needs That I Don’t Know Who I Am Anymore,”** explores what happens when being strong, dependable, and useful quietly becomes an identity.

If this feels familiar, today’s podcast and blog offer two different ways to sit with that recognition and begin listening inward again.

Maybe the goal isn’t to wait for life to settle down.

So many of us carry an unspoken promise to ourselves: *I’ll feel better when this project is finished. When the pressure eases. When the kids are okay. When work becomes manageable. When I finally get caught up." But there is almost always another responsibility waiting behind the one we are trying to finish. And eventually, something important becomes clear: if peace requires our circumstances to become peaceful first, we may spend much of our lives waiting for permission to exhale.

The shift isn’t necessarily about doing less, walking away, or pretending that our responsibilities don’t matter. It may simply be learning how to stop postponing ourselves until some imaginary future when everything finally settles down. Because perhaps the question isn’t, **“When will life become easier?”**. Perhaps it’s, **“How can I begin returning to myself while life is still happening?”**

I keep telling myself I’ll feel better when things settle down.
When work slows down.

When the uncertainty passes.

When the bills are handled.

When the family situation gets easier.

When I finally get caught up.

When I can breathe again.

But what happens when “settled down” keeps moving?

What happens when every resolved problem is replaced by another demand, another responsibility, another thing requiring your attention?

At some point, we may have to ask a different question.

What if peace isn’t waiting for us on the other side of a quieter life?

What if we’ve accidentally trained ourselves to postpone feeling okay until life gives us permission?

I Don’t Feel Like Myself Anymore

Have you ever looked at your life and realized that everything around you is familiar—but somehow you don’t feel quite as familiar to yourself?

You’re still showing up. Still carrying the responsibilities. Still being the person others depend upon.

But somewhere beneath all of it, there is a quiet feeling:

I don’t feel like myself anymore.

What if that doesn’t mean you’ve lost yourself?

What if, after years of becoming everything life needed you to be, the person underneath all those roles has simply become harder to hear?

VSP #6 Is Now Available

I Don’t Feel Like Myself Anymore is the newest VybeShift Solving Process—a deeply immersive journey exploring identity, presence, and what it might mean to return home to yourself.

If those five words—I don’t feel like myself anymore—feel strangely familiar, this may be a journey worth exploring.

Perhaps you haven’t lost yourself at all.

Perhaps you’ve simply forgotten where to look.

What If You’re Not the Problem?

Have you ever become so focused on improving your life that somewhere along the way you started treating yourself like the problem?

I think many of us do this without realizing it. We want to become healthier, stronger, more productive, more financially secure, more emotionally resilient, a better spouse, a better parent, a better leader. None of that is wrong.

But aspiration can quietly become rejection. Who I am right now isn’t enough.

And suddenly life becomes one enormous problem-solving exercise, with ourselves sitting at the center of the problem.

What if there is another way? What if instead of asking, “How do I fix myself?” we began asking, “What have I been carrying?”

Perhaps we don’t always need improvement before understanding. Perhaps we need relationship before transformation.

There is a particular kind of disappointment that comes from reaching a season of life when you believed you would finally feel certain.
You have lived.
You have learned.
You have survived difficult seasons, made important decisions, carried responsibilities, and found your way through situations you once thought might break you. And yet, somewhere beneath everything you have accomplished, there may still be a quiet thought:

**I thought I’d have this figured out by now.**

I thought I would know who I was.

I thought I would know what mattered.

I thought I would know where I was going next.

When that certainty does not arrive, it is easy to believe something has gone wrong.

But perhaps the uncertainty is not evidence that you have failed.

Perhaps the life you have known can no longer provide direction for the person you are becoming.

This week on *The Stage*, we create space for the deeply human experience of reaching a point where your old answers no longer seem to fit—and you cannot yet see what comes next.

08/03/2026

A new week begins, and you may already feel the pressure to become the person everyone needs you to be.

Productive.

Capable.

Focused.

Ready to carry whatever the week places before you. But beneath the movement, there may be another feeling you have not had time to acknowledge. You miss the person you used to be. The person who seemed to have more energy. The person who felt more confident.

The person who could move through life without questioning every decision, carrying every responsibility, or wondering when everything became so heavy. You may believe that moving forward requires finding your way back to that person. But what if you are not meant to go backward?

The person you used to be belonged to another season of your life. They carried the responsibilities, dreams, relationships, pressures, and understanding available to them at that time. They brought you here. But they may not be the person who is meant to carry you through this week—or into the life that is now emerging.

Sometimes growth does not immediately feel like becoming more of yourself. Sometimes it feels like losing yourself. The old identity no longer fits, but the new one has not yet become clear. You are living in the uncomfortable space between who you were and who you are becoming. That space can feel confusing, lonely, and frightening. But it does not necessarily mean you are lost.

You may simply be changing. As this week begins, perhaps you do not need to demand that you become your former self again. Perhaps you can become curious about who is here now.

I Keep Looking for the Person I Used to Be

There are seasons when you look at your life and realize you barely recognize the person living it.

You remember who you used to be—the energy you carried, the confidence you felt, the way you moved through the world before responsibility, disappointment, survival, and constant pressure began reshaping you.

And somewhere inside, you may still be searching for that person.

But what if the answer is not to return to who you were?

What if the person you keep looking for belonged to a life you have already outgrown?

Growth does not always feel like becoming. Sometimes it feels like losing yourself because the identity that once carried you can no longer hold the person you are becoming.

Today’s VybeShift blog explores the quiet grief of missing who you used to be—and the possibility that you are not meant to go backward.

You may be standing at the beginning of a more honest return: not to your former self, but to the deepest part of you that was never truly lost.

I Barely Recognize the Person I've Become

There is a question that many people quietly carry, but few ever say out loud:

"How did I become this person?"

Not because you've failed.

Not because you've become someone you don't like.

But because life has a subtle way of pulling us away from ourselves.

One responsibility.

One deadline.

One expectation.

One crisis after another.

Until the life you built slowly begins to feel like a life you're simply managing instead of living.

The surprising part is that this rarely happens all at once. It happens one unnoticed day at a time.

Then one morning, you pause. You look in the mirror and quietly realize,

"I barely recognize the person I've become."

The beautiful thing about recognition is this:

It isn't a sign that you've failed.

It's often the first indication that you're beginning to wake up.
