Executive Functioning skills are the fuel that takes students where they want to go. Most importantly, they’re not innate and unchangeable; they are teachable! At Staying Ahead of the Game, our mission is to teach these skills to as many students as we can. Executive Functioning skills are a lifelong investment; we are right by your side for the long haul. While we offer subject-specific tutoring

and standardized test prep as needed, our unique coaching program focuses on helping students improve their Executive Functioning skills. We meet students where they are and show them where they can go! Whether your student needs help building compensatory skills for a learning difference or would benefit from expert direction to perform at his or her highest potential, our academic coaches provide personalized, actionable guidance and accountability. Our founder and CEO, Evan Weinberger, struggled with ADHD throughout his education. He built SAOTG to provide the expert guidance he needed as a kid. Unlike traditional tutoring services, we provide long-lasting support rather than band-aid solutions. We want students to thrive after we’re gone, so we ensure our coaching services build the foundations of long-term academic independence. Staying Ahead of the Game coaches and tutors work one-on-one primarily with students from 3rd grade through college to sharpen their Executive Functioning skills. Our one-on-one approach to academic coaching is unique because it focuses on the development of life skills that transcend the classroom. We teach organization, time management, effective learning strategies, and impression management.

Common Grounds brought Houston’s mental health professionals together again this morning for another round of honest conversation and real connection. This month’s guest co-host was Ivy Ruths of Houston Anxiety & Wellness (Houston Anxiety & Wellness Center), adding another perspective to a room already full of people working to support students and families from every angle.

What makes Common Grounds worth the early morning is the reminder that the work of professionals supporting kids and families is even more powerful through collaboration.

Thank you to our event co-hosts: Evan Weinberger of Staying Ahead of the Game (Staying Ahead of the Game), Liz Ross of The Coping Resource Center (The Coping Resource Center), Leah Clionsky of Thriving Child Center (Thriving Child Center), and our special guest co-host Ivy Ruths of Houston Anxiety and Wellness Center for the lovely morning.

Shoutout to PX Project & Cafe (PX Project + PX Cafe) for the wonderful food and coffee. See you next time!

Evan Weinberger had the pleasure of attending Fusion Academy Galleria's Networking Coffee Chat, a wonderful gathering of community professionals hosted right on campus.

The featured presenter was Dr. Melissa Goldberg Mintz, a child psychologist, author, and Clinical Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, who spoke on raising resilient children. It was an engaging, thoughtful conversation that left the room buzzing.

Big thanks to Scott Fuller and Fusion Academy for putting together yet another great morning!

Our friends Julie Blumberg and Dee Dee Halpin of Houston School Options (Houston School Options LLC) stopped by the office yesterday, and it felt a lot like a family reunion!

Julie and Dee Dee work with families across Greater Houston to find the right local school fit for their child. We have so much admiration for the work they do guiding families through this important decision. We had a wonderful conversation about creative ways to serve our shared community even better together. We’re so grateful for these partnerships that make the work we do even more impactful.

For most families, the back-to-school transition is a cliff, not a ramp. Summer structure evaporates in June, and then it's expected to reappear in September, fully formed, on day one.

It doesn't work that way. Sleep, routines, and systems don't reset themselves. They have to be rebuilt, deliberately, before the first bell rings.

The final two weeks of summer are what we call the August Cliff. Handled passively, they end in a jarring drop back into structure — a student who's shocked awake, scrambling for a planner, relearning a morning routine in real time. Handled deliberately, those same two weeks become a ramp: wake times shifted earlier in small increments, a planner set up before anything is due, a full dry run of the morning before it counts.

Momentum is real and it is directional. The first month either builds it or spends it. A student who starts the year rested and rehearsed moves differently than one who starts it catching up.

Move the morning, and the rest of the day follows.

Moving up to middle school, high school, or college can feel like a big leap. But for most students, the surprise isn't that the work got harder. It's that the rules changed.

In earlier grades, the structure is built in. One teacher keeps track of everyone. Deadlines get announced out loud, more than once. Someone notices when an assignment slips.

At the next level, a lot of that support quietly disappears. Now there are five or six teachers instead of one. The deadlines live in a syllabus you're expected to read on your own. There's a locker to manage, passing periods to figure out, and open stretches of time that used to be planned for you.

None of that means a student is falling behind. It just means the scaffolding they leaned on is gone, and they haven't built their own yet.

That's the part we care about most: helping students plan ahead, track their own work, and ask for help early, so students can thrive from day one.

We’re excited to announce a new partnership between Staying Ahead of the Game and Gramercy Music Academy! Two Houston organizations with one shared mission: helping students build the skills and confidence they need to thrive.

At SAOTG, we believe success is about more than grades. It’s about developing the Executive Functioning skills that help students stay organized, manage their time, study effectively, and become more independent learners. Gramercy Music Academy shares that same commitment to helping students grow through music education, creativity, and discipline. Together, we’re making it even easier for families to access both.

Exclusive partnership offers through December 31, 2026:

Gramercy Music Academy families receive a waived $200 SAOTG initiation fee when you mention GMA.

SAOTG families receive Gramercy Music Academy’s special $129/month membership rate (regularly $252/month) when you mention SAOTG.

Whether your student is strengthening Executive Functioning skills, discovering a love for music, or both, we’re proud to work together to help Houston students thrive.

Offer valid through December 31, 2026. Partnership benefits are available to currently enrolled and active students/families of the partner organization.
