Beggs lost a true cornerstone of our community this week.
If you grew up in Beggs, you knew the steady voice, the warm smile, and the deep well of knowledge that belonged to BILL WILBURN. Our community lost him this week, and it’s hard to imagine Beggs without the man who spent a lifetime pouring himself into this town.
For decades...well, actually a 1/2 century, Bill was the unmistakable voice of Beggs football. His game announcements weren’t just part of Friday nights- they were part of our memories. He had a way of making every play feel bigger, every moment feel rooted in tradition.
Most of us remember him best as our longtime Beggs Postmaster, a role he carried with pride and absolute consistency. Bill ran that post office like a community gathering place. He knew everyone, treated everyone with kindness, and made even a quick stop at the counter feel like visiting an old friend.
Bill also served as President of the Beggs Alumni Association for many years. His leadership shaped the sense of continuity that still holds our alumni community together. Several board members joined because of him - because he believed in the alumni program and believed in keeping Beggs history alive.
And that history? Bill carried it better than anyone. He was our unofficial town historian, the person people went to when they needed to know anything about Beggs- the school, the families, the early days, the oil boom, the lesser-known interesting happenings of the past... the stories that make this place what it is. Even local writers and researchers leaned on him for accuracy and detail.
He stepped down from the alumni board several years ago as his health declined, but his impact never faded. Bill graduated from Beggs, served Beggs, and spent his life strengthening the community he loved.
Today, we remember him and we honor him for everything he gave:
His voice.
His service.
His leadership.
His memory.
His heart for the 2-6-7.
