You don’t always have to tell your side of the story because time will.

Leaders can be honest without being completely open with all the details. Sometimes we must deliver a deeper service by protecting others. It’s part of the loneliness of leadership – the knowledge we have that would serve no useful purpose other than serving ourselves.

Lisa and I mulled over that opening line in hopes of sharing our insights so you won’t feel so alone in your leadership journey. It’s not always in the best interest of those you serve (or your leadership) to share the full details of every story in your life.

More often than not time does tell the story. So we don’t have to.

Ever wonder why a police cars’ engine is running but no officers are inside?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone. We get that question a lot and believe me, there are many safety reasons behind it.

The first has to deal with our computer systems, GPS devices, and various electronics inside that all require a lot of power to keep running. If we turn the engine off, it would drain the vehicle batteries in a matter of minutes and turn off all of these systems. We have a vehicle starting system that kick-starts the battery, allowing us to restart the engine, but then we’re left with re-booting all systems to get back online. This is problematic when returning to a dead patrol vehicle and trying to respond to an emergency call. We may miss those critical details that dispatch inputs in the calls.

Could someone drive the patrol vehicle away? No, our vehicles are equipped with a safe start running system that allows the engine to continue operating without a key. If someone were to get inside, the engine would stop.

We do recognize this question and have thought of cost effective and environmentally safe solutions. We’re transitioning to hybrid vehicles that require less engine run time to keep our systems operating. When parked, the engine automatically monitors the vehicle battery and turn on when the battery gets low. Once the battery is re-charged, the engine turns off and that cycle repeats itself.

We hope this brings some clarity as to why police cars are left running.
