What Are You Seeking?

I say this spiel many times, but that’s because I understand it. I see it in many people, and once you have seen it, it’s impossible not to notice.

I find that I get many demographics coming to my programs, and they are all seeking the same thing: Connection.

My mentors have helped me find it, and I make strides to deepen that connection where I can. Now it is my job to pay it forward and give you the tools to find it.

It can be to your ancestry, nature, family, religion, craft, community, yourself, your food, et cetera.

What about you? What are you seeking? Are you ready to accept it? (A remedy for mosquito bites is also acceptable)

I was commissioned to make a utensil set with a pouch.

These are carved from wild-harvested tulip tree with a totem of the leaf on the top of the handles and sealed with a beeswax/olive oil salve.

The bag is made from deer hide that I skinned, scraped, and tanned with acorn and red oak bark.

It is sewn together with dogbane cordage that I twisted using reverse wrap.

The button is deer antler.

That time I went on a mammoth hunt at Bradford Woods.

I was reading an article yesterday on post-hunt rituals of the Eastern Woodland tribes, and how they gave thanks after taking an animal.

Rather than treating a successful hunt as a personal accomplishment, gratitude was given to acknowledge that the hunt was bigger than themselves -- it was about recognizing the process and what it meant to be a part of the circle of life.

Reading about it made me wonder if at some point we have lost that. I know in the past I have put significance on how important a successful hunt was to me as an archer and an individual...but in reality it's much more than that.

Maybe that makes sense and maybe it doesn't?

But I think we could all benefit as hunters, to acknowledge that we should treat the land and animals as something you're responsible for, rather than simply something you take from.
