It's been a few months since I wrapped up my early conference season, and I finally sat down to write the recap.

This spring I attended three conferences back to back. APWA Washington in Vancouver, PNWS-AWWA Water 2026 in Tacoma, and APWA Oregon in Seaside. Three very different experiences, a lot of familiar faces, and some really great presentations.

I shared about my experience at the PNWS-AWWA Conference golf tournament in my last post. But there were some other great highlights I wanted to share!

The rest of the week was filled with sessions, networking, and great conversations while representing both Oxsen Learning and Grayling Engineers.

One moment that stood out for me was judging the Young Professionals Poster Competition. It was inspiring to see all the hard work these students were putting in. Reflecting back to my college days got me thinking about something I see that can be a challenge across the industry: how we communicate our technical work to others.

What a great week in Tacoma for the PNWS-AWWA conference!

We kicked things off at the golf tournament with a hole sponsorship by Oxsen Learning. I had my partner-in-crime join me, Reed Oxsen. It was really fun to get to introduce him to the water community.

As we were packing up, I asked him for his takeaway. He said he could tell this is a group of really good people.

That sums up everyone I've met over the years in the drinking water community. People who care about the work they do, and it shows in even the simplest interactions. It makes me continually proud to be part of this industry.

Invest in the right training early, and it pays back in several ways: faster readiness, real contributions sooner, and people who feel invested in from the start.

I've had the unique opportunity to build Oxsen Learning while also contributing to the foundational development of a company that shares the same values. One of my favorite parts of my role at Grayling Engineers is listening to our engineers and supporting their growth. From those conversations, I've been able to build trainings, tools, and systems that address real needs, for the individual and for the company.

The AutoCAD Civil 3D Basics course was one of the first things I built. It addresses one of the most consistent gaps I've seen across the industry: the transition from school experience to real project work.
