Prepping rocks for an event next week. On a 3 day walk from the zoo to the Salem Capitol we will cross through the lands of the Ahantchuyuk and Santiam tribes. South and East of the Willamette River where it bends back South in the Valley.

Our first rocks were spread around Commonwealth Park this afternoon! A young woman was making daisy chain crowns and offered us one and we traded it for one of our rocks! While bird watching, a couple pointed out a blue heron across the lake and when we met them again on the trail we offered them a rock too. In just a single hour we found other nature lovers and helped spread our message.

Native Names Rock is part of an ongoing community awareness project. Through the art of painting rocks, providing community volunteer events and distribution of Native Names along hiking trails, parks and public areas, this group's mission is to promote opportunities for community engagement and appreciation for the history of land and its Peoples.
The first distribution begins on 7/3 and will include rocks bearing the name: a-tfa'lati
This is the name that the Tualatin Kalapuya peoples called themselves. Their traditional homelands ranged from the Yamhill river, north to Sauvie's Island, West into and around Gaston lake.
