✨Faculty Spotlight Friday ✨

Dr. Melanie Cosker, DNP, RN, is a Nursing Instructor on the Monroeville/Thomasville campuses with 30 years of Nursing experience. Her practice experience includes Long-Term Care, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, Medical-Surgical, Employee Health, Infection Control, and Travel Nursing. In her time at Coastal Alabama Community College, Dr. Cosker has taught across the curriculum, including NUR 112, NUR 113, NUR 114, and NUR 115. Dr. Cosker has ridden 100 miles on a bicycle in one day as a participant in Peddlin’ for a Cure! She also loves to travel and quilting! Faculty Spotlight

Program Director, Medical Assistant Technology

Coastal Alabama Community College

Meet Carol Stapleton, Program Director of the Medical Assisting Technology Program at Coastal Alabama Community College. Carol joined Coastal Alabama in October 2022, bringing with her more than 25 years of diverse clinical experience and a passion for educating the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Before becoming Program Director, Carol served as an adjunct nursing instructor at Coastal Alabama. Her extensive clinical background includes experience in inpatient orthopedic surgery, medical-surgical nursing, outpatient urology, and outpatient radiation oncology. Throughout her career, she has worked closely with medical assistants and developed a deep appreciation for the essential role they play in delivering quality patient care.

Carol earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Mobile in 1997 and her Master of Nursing Education from the University of South Alabama in 2010. She went on to earn a Master of Science in Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner in 2012 and became a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) in September 2022. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at the University of Mobile, with an anticipated completion date of May 2027.

In 2023, Carol and Dr. Natalie Dukes, Associate Dean of Allied Health, proudly launched the Medical Assisting Technology Program at Coastal Alabama Community College. Their efforts helped establish a program dedicated to preparing skilled, compassionate medical assistants, and the program achieved initial accreditation in June 2024.

Carol’s combination of clinical expertise, teaching experience, and commitment to student success continues to be an important part of the program’s growth and success.

💕 Fun Fact

When Carol isn’t teaching, mentoring students, or working toward her doctorate, she loves creating crafts with her daughters, Ella Grace and Faith. Her day isn’t quite complete until she gets to share one of their adorable creations—sometimes even a handmade pair of earrings—with someone else! 🎨✨

Students and Faculty recognized the incredible impact of Mr. Timothy Pimperl! Mr. Pimperl teaches Anatomy and Physiology at Coastal. Students reflected on how his lessons have been incredibly valuable for their current nursing school courses. Mr. Pimperl was presented with notes of appreciation and a Coastal shirt.

A cyberattack is keeping the Alabama Board of Nursing’s entire online licensing system offline, affecting nurses statewide working to renew their licenses, and new graduates trying to get licensed for the first time.

We were honored to welcome MedStar-Lifeguard AirCare to the Coastal Alabama Community College Brewton Campus! 🚁🩺 Their visit gave our Fundamentals Nursing students an exciting opportunity to learn about emergency flight nursing and explore the many career paths available in the profession. Experiences like this inspire, encourage, and remind our students of the incredible possibilities ahead. We are so thankful to the team for taking the time to visit and invest in the future of nursing! ❤️🐺
