I made a comic. 🤘⚡

That still feels strange to say.

Professor Shred started as an idea, and somehow it grew into an entire universe. Today I got the Collector Edition poster from Issue #1 framed and hung it on my wall.

I’m incredibly proud of this one.

I have no idea how far this project will ultimately go, but I know I’m going to keep building it.

🎼 VOICE LEADING: SMOOTHER MOVES, BETTER MUSIC.

Good chord progressions are not just about choosing the right chords.

They are also about how each note moves from one chord to the next.

The goal of voice leading is simple:

Move the fewest notes by the smallest distance.

For example, in C major:

Cmaj7 → Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7

The chords already work functionally.

But when you keep common tones in place and move the other notes by step, the progression sounds smoother, more connected, and more intentional.

That is the real power of voice leading:

⚡ Less unnecessary jumping
⚡ Stronger connection between chords
⚡ Smoother tension and resolution
⚡ More emotion with less effort

Try this:

Take a simple progression like:

I → vi → IV → V → I

Play it once with large jumps between chord shapes.

Then play it again using the closest available inversions.

You will hear the difference immediately.

Theory tells you which chords work.

Voice leading teaches you how to make them flow.

⚡ SUSPENDED CHORDS: CREATE TENSION… THEN RESOLVE IT.

Suspended chords work by removing the 3rd—the note that tells us whether a chord is major or minor—and replacing it with either the 2nd or the 4th.

In C:

Csus2 = C–D–G
Csus4 = C–F–G
C major = C–E–G

That missing 3rd creates an unfinished sound.

Then the resolution gives the listener the payoff:

Csus2 → C
D rises to E

Csus4 → C
F falls to E

This is one of the easiest ways to make a simple progression feel more expressive without adding complicated harmony.

Try this challenge:

Write a 4-chord progression in any key, use at least one sus2 or sus4 chord, then resolve it back to the regular major or minor chord.

🎧 TRAIN YOUR EARS, NOT JUST YOUR FINGERS.

A lot of musicians can play shapes, patterns, and scales—but still struggle to recognize what they are hearing.

That is where interval training changes everything.

Try listening for these five:

m3 — Minor Third
P4 — Perfect Fourth
P5 — Perfect Fifth
M7 — Major Seventh
Oct — Octave

A good practice method:

1. Sing the interval first.
2. Find it on your instrument.
3. Play it in more than one key.
4. Listen for its emotional character.
5. Repeat for a few minutes every day.

The goal is not just to name the interval.

The goal is to hear it before you play it.

🎵 ONE CHORD CAN CHANGE THE WHOLE MOOD.

Start with a familiar progression in C major:

C → Am → Dm → G → C
I → vi → ii → V → I

Now try this:

C → B♭ → F → G → C
I → ♭VII → IV → V → I

That B♭ major chord is the ♭VII—a borrowed chord commonly taken from the parallel minor sound.

Why does it work?

⚡ It creates an unexpected shift
⚡ It adds extra color and emotional weight
⚡ It still moves naturally into F, G, and back home to C

Theory is not just a list of rules. It gives you more ways to control tension, movement, and emotion in your music.

🎼 MINI LESSON: WHY SOME CHORD PROGRESSIONS FEEL LIKE A JOURNEY

Great harmony is not just a collection of chords—it is movement.

In functional harmony, chords often serve different jobs:

🏠 TONIC = HOME
The music feels stable, settled, and complete.

🚶 SUBDOMINANT = MOTION
The progression begins moving away from home and creates forward momentum.

⚡ DOMINANT = TENSION
The music builds expectation and strongly pulls toward resolution.

Try this in C major:

C → F → G → C

I → IV → V → I

🔥 THEORY DROP: SECONDARY DOMINANTS 🔥

Sometimes a progression needs more than the chords naturally found in the key.

That’s where secondary dominants come in.

A secondary dominant temporarily treats another chord like a destination by placing its own V chord in front of it.

In C major:

A7 → Dm7 = V/ii
D7 → G7 = V/V
E7 → Am7 = V/vi

Those dominant 7th chords introduce notes from outside the key, creating stronger tension and a much more powerful pull toward the target chord.

Use them to:

⚡ Add harmonic tension
🎯 Highlight an important chord
🔥 Make progressions sound more alive, dramatic, and intentional

Theory is not about memorizing random rules.

It is about understanding how to control movement, tension, and resolution so your music says exactly what you want it to say.

Advanced chords are not just “fancier” chords.

They are stronger colors.

A plain chord tells you where you are.

An advanced chord tells you where the music wants to go.

Example in C major:

Cmaj7 → Dm9 → G13 → Cmaj9

That is still a simple I → ii → V → I movement.

But now the colors are deeper:

Cmaj7 gives the home chord a smoother, wider sound.
Dm9 adds motion without sounding basic.
G13 creates dominant tension with more flavor.
Cmaj9 resolves back home with a polished, emotional finish.

Same functional harmony.

Bigger vocabulary.

Instead of only thinking:

C → Dm → G → C

Start hearing:

Home → Movement → Tension → Resolution

That is where chords stop being shapes and start becoming musical weapons.

Quick music theory tip:

A chord progression is not just a random list of chords that sound good together.

The chords have jobs.

Example:

C - Am - F - G

In the key of C major, that becomes:

I - vi - IV - V

That means:

C / I = home base
Am / vi = emotional color
F / IV = lift or movement
G / V = tension that wants to resolve

That’s why this progression feels familiar, emotional, and complete. It has a shape to it:

home → emotional shift → lift → tension → back home
